1エズラが祈り、罪を告白し、泣きながら神の家の前にひれ伏していると、イスラエルから男、女、子どもの非常に大きな会衆が彼のもとに集まった。民は激しく泣いていた。
1Now while Ezra prayed, and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there was gathered together unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children; for the people wept very sore.
2エラムの子らの一人、エヒエルの子シェカニヤがエズラに言った。「私たちは神に背き、その地の諸国の民から異国の女たちを妻に迎えました。それでも今、このことについてイスラエルには希望があります。
2And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra: 'We have broken faith with our God, and have married foreign women of the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope for Israel concerning this thing.
3それゆえ今、わが主の助言と、私たちの神の命令に震える者たちの助言に従い、すべての妻と、その妻たちから生まれた子どもたちを去らせる契約を、私たちの神と結びましょう。律法に従って行いましょう。
3Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of the LORD, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
4立ち上がってください。このことはあなたにかかっています。私たちもあなたとともにいます。勇気を出して実行してください。」
4Arise; for the matter belongeth unto thee, and we are with thee; be of good courage, and do it.'
5そこでエズラは立ち上がり、祭司の長たち、レビ人たち、全イスラエルに、このことばどおりに行うと誓わせた。彼らは誓った。
5Then arose Ezra, and made the chiefs of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to swear that they would do according to this word. So they swore.
6それからエズラは神の家の前を去り、エルヤシブの子エホハナンの部屋に入った。彼はそこにいる間、パンを食べず、水も飲まなかった。捕囚から帰った者たちの背信を嘆いていたからである。
6Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water; for he mourned because of the faithlessness of them of the captivity.
7そしてユダとエルサレム全土に、捕囚から帰った者たちは皆エルサレムに集まるようにとの布告が出された。
7And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity, that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem;
8君たちと長老たちの決定により、三日以内に来ない者は、その全財産を没収され、本人も捕囚から帰った者たちの会衆から追放されることになった。
8and that whosoever came not within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of the captivity.
9そこでユダとベニヤミンのすべての男たちは、三日以内にエルサレムへ集まった。それは第九の月の二十日であった。民は皆、神の家の前の広場に座り、この問題と大雨のために震えていた。
9Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within the three days; it was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people sat in the broad place before the house of God, trembling because of this matter, and for the great rain.
10祭司エズラは立ち上がって言った。「あなたがたは神に背き、異国の女たちを妻に迎えて、イスラエルの罪責を増し加えた。
10And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them: 'Ye have broken faith, and have married foreign women, to increase the guilt of Israel.
11それゆえ今、あなたがたの父祖の神、主の前に罪を告白し、その御心を行え。その地の民と、異国の女たちから離れよ。」
11Now therefore make confession unto the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do His pleasure; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the foreign women.'
12すると全会衆は大声で答えた。「あなたの言われたとおりに、私たちは行います。
12Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice: 'As thou hast said, so it is for us to do.
13しかし民は多く、今は大雨の時期なので、外に立ち続けることはできません。また、これは一日や二日で済む仕事ではありません。私たちはこの件で大きな罪を犯したからです。
13But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two; for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.
14全会衆を代表する君たちを任命してください。私たちの町々で異国の女を妻に迎えた者は皆、定められた時に、それぞれの町の長老と裁判官を伴って来るようにしてください。この件が解決し、私たちに向けられた神の激しい怒りが去るまで、そのようにしましょう。」
14Let now our princes of all the congregation stand, and let all them that are in our cities that have married foreign women come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God be turned from us, as touching this matter.'
15ただアサエルの子ヨナタンとティクワの子ヤフゼヤはこの案に反対し、メシュラムとレビ人シャベタイが彼らを支持した。
15Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah stood up against this matter; and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them.
16捕囚から帰った者たちは、そのとおりにした。祭司エズラと、父祖の家ごとに選ばれた家長たちが、それぞれ名を挙げて任命された。彼らは第十の月の一日に、この件を調べるため席に着いた。
16And the children of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain heads of fathers' houses, after their fathers' houses, and all of them by their names, were separated; and they sat down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
17そして第一の月の一日までに、異国の女を妻に迎えたすべての男について調査を終えた。
17And they were finished with all the men that had married foreign women by the first day of the first month.
18祭司の子らのうち、異国の女を妻に迎えていた者は次のとおりである。 エホツァダクの子エシュアの子らとその兄弟たちのうち、マアセヤ、エリエゼル、ヤリブ、ゲダルヤ。
18And among the sons of the priests there were found that had married foreign women, namely: of the sons of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and his brethren, Maaseiah, and Eliezer, and Jarib, and Gedaliah.
19彼らは妻を去らせることを誓約し、罪責を負う者として、その罪過のために羊の群れから雄羊一頭をささげた。
19And they gave their hand that they would put away their wives; and being guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their guilt.
20イメルの子らのうち、ハナニとゼバデヤ。
20And of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah.
21ハリムの子らのうち、マアセヤ、エリヤ、シェマヤ、エヒエル、ウジヤ。
21And of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, and Elijah, and Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.
22パシュフルの子らのうち、エリオエナイ、マアセヤ、イシュマエル、ネタンエル、ヨザバド、エラサ。
22And of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.
23レビ人のうち、ヨザバド、シムイ、ケラヤ（別名ケリタ）、ペタフヤ、ユダ、エリエゼル。
23And of the Levites: Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah — the same is Kelita — Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.
24歌うたいたちのうち、エルヤシブ。 門衛たちのうち、シャルム、テレム、ウリ。
24And of the singers: Eliashib; and of the porters: Shallum, and Telem, and Uri.
25イスラエルのうち、パロシュの子らでは、ラミヤ、イズヤ、マルキヤ、ミヤミン、エルアザル、マルキヤ、ベナヤ。
25And of Israel: of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, and Izziah, and Malchijah, and Mijamin, and Eleazar, and Malchijah, and Benaiah.
26エラムの子らでは、マタヌヤ、ゼカリヤ、エヒエル、アブディ、エレモテ、エリヤ。
26And of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, and Abdi, and Jeremoth, and Elijah.
27ザトの子らでは、エリオエナイ、エルヤシブ、マタヌヤ、エレモテ、ザバド、アジザ。
27And of the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth, and Zabad, and Aziza.
28ベバイの子らでは、エホハナン、ハナニヤ、ザバイ、アテライ。
28And of the sons of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai.
29バニの子らでは、メシュラム、マルク、アダヤ、ヤシュブ、シェアル、エレモテ。
29And of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and Sheal, and Ramoth.
30パハテ・モアブの子らでは、アドナ、ケラル、ベナヤ、マアセヤ、マタヌヤ、ベツァルエル、ビンヌイ、マナセ。
30And of the sons of Pahath-moab: Adna, and Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, and Binnui, and Manasseh.
31ハリムの子らでは、エリエゼル、イシヤ、マルキヤ、シェマヤ、シメオン、
31And of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon;
32ベニヤミン、マルク、シェマルヤ。
32Benjamin, Malluch, Shemariah.
33ハシュムの子らでは、マテナイ、マタタ、ザバド、エリフェレテ、エレマイ、マナセ、シムイ。
33Of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, Shimei.
34バニの子らでは、マアダイ、アムラム、ウエル、
34Of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, and Uel;
35ベナヤ、ベデヤ、ケルヒ、
35Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluhu;
36ワヌヤ、メレモテ、エルヤシブ、
36Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib;
37マタヌヤ、マテナイ、ヤアス、
37Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasai;
38バニ、ビンヌイ、シムイ、
38and Bani, and Binnui, Shimei;
39シェレミヤ、ナタン、アダヤ、
39Shelemiah, and Nathan, and Adaiah;
40マクナデバイ、シャシャイ、シャライ、
40Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai;
41アザレル、シェレミヤ、シェマルヤ、
41Azarel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah;
42シャルム、アマルヤ、ヨセフ。
42Shallum, Amariah, Joseph.
43ネボの子らでは、エイエル、マティティヤ、ザバド、ゼビナ、イド、ヨエル、ベナヤ。
43Of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, and Joel, Benaiah.
44これらの者は皆、異国の妻を迎えていた。その妻との間に子どもがいた者もあった。
44All these had taken foreign wives; and some of them had wives by whom they had children.
