1У четвертому роцї Йоакимовому, царя Юдейського, надійшло від Господа слово до Еремії:
1And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying:
2Возьми книговий звиток та й посписуй в йому всї слова, що я тобі говорив про Ізраїля й про Юду й про всї народи з того часу, як я почав говорити тобі, з часів Йосіїних та й по сей день;
2'Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day.
3Може дом Юдин, почувши про всї нещастя, які я задумав на них наслати, вернеться кожен із ледачої своєї дороги, — нехай би я простив неправедність їх, і гріхи їх.
3It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way, and I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.'
4І прикликав Еремія Варуха Нирієнка, й вписав Варух у книговий звиток, так як йому Еремія проказував всї слова Господнї, які він йому говорив.
4Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which He had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book.
5І наказав Еремія Варухові так: Мене заперто і не можу пійти в дом Господень;
5And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying: 'I am detained, I cannot go into the house of the LORD;
6Так ійди ти, й прочитай із книгового звитка написані з уст моїх слова Господнї голосно перед народом в день посту; та й перед усїма Юдеями, що поприходять із городів своїх, прочитай їх на голос.
6therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD'S house upon a fast-day; and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.
7Може вони стануть засилати покірні молитви перед лице Господнє і кожне з них вернеться з ледачої дороги своєї; бо великий гнїв і досаду обявив (менї) Господь на сей нарід.
7It may be they will present their supplication before the LORD, and will return every one from his evil way; for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced against this people.'
8І вчинив Варух Нирієнко все, що повелїв йому пророк Еремія, щоб слова Господнї, написані в звитку, прочитати в дому Господньому.
8And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of the LORD in the LORD'S house.
9У пятому ж роцї Йоакимовому Йосієнковому, царя Юдейського, в девятому місяцї, оповіщено піст перед лицем Господнїм всьому людові в Ерусалимі й усьому народові, що поприходив із городів у Ерусалим.
9Now it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD, all the people in Jerusalem, and all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.
10І перечитав Варух перед усїм народом слова Ереміїні в дому Господньому, в сьвітлицї писаря Гемарії Сафаненка, на верхньому подвіррі, коло ввіходу в нові ворота в дому Господньому.
10Then did Baruch read in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entry of the new gate of the LORD'S house, in the ears of all the people.
11А Михей Гемарієнко Сафаненко, вислухавши всї слова Господнї, написані в книзї,
11And when Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all the words of the LORD,
12Пійшов у царську палату, в будинок писарів, а там седїли всї князї: царський писарь Елисам, і Делаїя Семаїєнко, й Елнатан Ахборенко, й Гемарія Сафаненко, й Седекія Ананїєнко, й усї князї;
12he went down into the king's house, into the scribe's chamber; and, lo, all the princes sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.
13І переповів їм Михей усї слова, що чув, як Варух читав звиток голосно перед народом.
13Then Micaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people.
14Тодї послали всї князї до Варуха — Егудїя Натанїєнка, сина Селеміїного, сина Хусіїного, сказати йому: Возьми звиток, що читав єси людові, та й приходь. І взяв Варух Нирієнко звиток в свою руку, й прийшов до них.
14Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, unto Baruch, saying: 'Take in thy hand the roll wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come.' So Baruch the son of Neriah took the roll in his hand, and came unto them.
15Вони сказали йому: Сїдай і прочитай нам на голос; і Варух прочитав їм голосно.
15And they said unto him: 'Sit down now, and read it in our ears.' So Baruch read it in their ears.
16Вислухавши ж вони всї слова, поглядали з переляком один на одного та й кажуть Варухові: Нам би конче переказати цареві всї оцї слова.
16Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they turned in fear one toward another, and said unto Baruch: 'We will surely tell the king of all these words.'
17І поспитали в Варуха: Розкажи ж нам, як ти списав всї слова цї з його уст?
17And they asked Baruch, saying: 'Tell us now: How didst thou write all these words at his mouth?'
18І відказав їм Варух: Він промовляв менї устами всї ʼцї слова, я ж писав їх у книзї чернилом.
18Then Baruch answered them: 'He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.'
19І сказали князї Варухові: Ійди й сховайся, ти й Еремія, так щоб нїхто не знав, де ви.
19Then said the princes unto Baruch: 'Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah, and let no man know where ye are.'
20Потім подались до царя у двір, зоставивши звиток у сьвітлицї царського писаря Елисама, та й розповіли цареві всю справу.
20And they went in to the king into the court; but they had deposited the roll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe; and they told all the words in the ears of the king.
21І послав царь Егудїя по книгу, і взяв її сей із будинку царського писаря Елисама; й читав її Егудїй наголос перед царем і всїма князями, що стояли навкруги царя.
21So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll; and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes that stood beside the king.
22Царь же перебував під той час, — се було в девятому місяцї — в зимовому дворі, а перед ним горів жар у кітлику.
22Now the king was sitting in the winter-house in the ninth month; and the brazier was burning before him.
23Що разу, як Егудїй перечитав два чи три листки, одрізував він їх писарським ножиком і кидав на огонь у кітлику, аж покіль увесь звиток ізгорів на огнї.
23And it came to pass, when Jehudi had read three or four columns, that he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.
24Та не збоялись і не роздерли на собі одежі нї царь, нї всї його слуги, що вислухали всї ʼцї слова.
24Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.
25І хоч Елнатан і Делаїя й Гемарія царя благали не палити звитка, то він їх не послухав.
25Moreover Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had entreated the king not to burn the roll; but he would not hear them.
26Ба ще й повелїв царь Ерамеїлові Амелехенкові, і Сераїї Азриїленкові та Селемії Авдиїленкові спіймати Варуха, писаря, і Еремію, пророка; та Господь охоронив їх.
26And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet; but the LORD hid them.
27І надійшло слово Господнє до Еремії, після того, як царь спалив звиток із тими словами, що посписував їх Варух із уст Ереміїних, і сказано йому:
27Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying:
28Возьми собі другого звитка та й спиши на йому всї слова, що були на першому звиткові, що його спалив Йоаким, царь Юдейський;
28'Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned.
29І скажи про Йоакима, царя Юдейського, так: Ось що говорить Господь: Спалив єси того звитка, кажучи: На що ти написав в йому, що царь Вавилонський певно прийде й землю сю звоює, а люде й скотину в їй повигублює? —
29And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah thou shalt say: Thus saith the LORD: Thou hast burned this roll, saying: Why hast thou written therein, saying: The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?
30Тим же то говорить Господь про Йоакима, царя Юдейського, так: Не мати ме він потомка, що седїв би на Давидовому престолї, і лежати ме труп його, кинутий на дневну спеку й на ночну холоднечу;
30Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David; and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.
31І скараю його й рід його й слуги його за їх неправедність, і пошлю на їх і на осадників Ерусалимських і на всїх мужів Юдейських усе лихо, що вирік на них, а вони того не слухали.
31And I will visit upon him and his seed and his servants their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them, but they hearkened not.'
32І взяв Еремія другого звитка та й передав його писареві Варухові Нирієнкові, а сей списав на йому всї слова тої книги, що її спалив Йоаким, царь Юдейський, так як проказував йому Еремія, — надто ж іще добавлено до того многі такі ж слова.
32Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and there were added besides unto them many like words.
