1เมื่อฝ่ายตรงข้ามของยูดาห์และเบนยามินได้ยินว่าผู้กลับมาจากการเป็นเชลยกำลังสร้างพระวิหารถวายพระยาห์เวห์ พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอล
1Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple unto the LORD, the God of Israel;
2พวกเขาก็มาหาเศรุบบาเบลและหัวหน้าตระกูล กล่าวว่า “ให้เราร่วมสร้างกับพวกคุณด้วยเถิด เพราะเราแสวงหาพระเจ้าของพวกคุณเช่นเดียวกับพวกคุณ และถวายเครื่องบูชาแด่พระองค์มาตั้งแต่สมัยเอสาร์ฮัดโดน กษัตริย์แห่งอัสซีเรียที่นำเรามาอยู่ที่นี่”
2then they drew near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers' houses, and said unto them: 'Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.'
3แต่เศรุบบาเบล เยชูอา และหัวหน้าตระกูลคนอื่น ๆ ของอิสราเอลตอบว่า “พวกคุณไม่มีส่วนร่วมกับเราในการสร้างพระวิหารถวายพระเจ้าของเรา พวกเราเองจะร่วมกันสร้างถวายพระยาห์เวห์ พระเจ้าแห่งอิสราเอล ตามที่กษัตริย์ไซรัสแห่งเปอร์เซียสั่งเราไว้”
3But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers' houses of Israel, said unto them: 'Ye have nothing to do with us to build a house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD, the God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.'
4คนในดินแดนนั้นจึงทำให้ชาวยูดาห์หมดกำลังใจ และก่อความเดือดร้อนขณะก่อสร้าง
4Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and harried them while they were building,
5พวกเขาจ้างที่ปรึกษาให้ขัดขวางชาวยูดาห์เพื่อให้แผนงานล้มเหลว ทำเช่นนี้ตลอดรัชสมัยของไซรัส กษัตริย์แห่งเปอร์เซีย จนถึงรัชสมัยของดาริอัส กษัตริย์แห่งเปอร์เซีย
5and hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Aramaic character, and set forth in the Aramaic tongue.
8เรฮูม เสนาบดี กับชิมชัย อาลักษณ์ เขียนจดหมายกล่าวหากรุงเยรูซาเล็มถึงกษัตริย์อารทาเซอร์ซีส มีข้อความดังต่อไปนี้
8Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort —
9ผู้เขียนคือเรฮูม เสนาบดี ชิมชัย อาลักษณ์ และพรรคพวกคนอื่น ๆ ได้แก่ ชาวดีนา ชาวอาฟาร์สัท ชาวทาร์เปล ชาวอาฟาร์ ชาวอาร์เค ชาวบาบิโลน ชาวชูชาน ชาวเดฮา ชาวเอลาม
9then wrote Rehum the commander, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinites, and the Apharesattechites, the Tarpelites, the Apharesites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehites, the Elamites,
10รวมทั้งชนชาติอื่น ๆ ที่อัสนัปปาร์ผู้ยิ่งใหญ่และมีเกียรตินำมาตั้งถิ่นฐานในเมืองสะมาเรียและดินแดนส่วนอื่น ๆ ฟากแม่น้ำ เป็นต้น
10and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asenappar brought over, and set in the city of Samaria, and the rest that are in the country beyond the River: — 'And now —
11ต่อไปนี้คือสำเนาจดหมายที่พวกเขาส่งไป ถึงกษัตริย์อารทาเซอร์ซีส จากผู้รับใช้ของพระองค์ คือชาวดินแดนฟากแม่น้ำ
11this is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king — thy servants the men beyond the River — and now

12be it known unto the king, that the Jews that came up from thee are come to us unto Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and have finished the walls, and are digging out the foundations.
13ขอให้กษัตริย์ทราบด้วยว่า ถ้าสร้างเมืองนี้ขึ้นใหม่และสร้างกำแพงเสร็จ พวกเขาจะไม่จ่ายบรรณาการ ภาษีศุลกากร หรือค่าผ่านทาง ในที่สุดจะเกิดความเสียหายแก่กษัตริย์ทั้งหลาย
13Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, impost, or toll, and so thou wilt endamage the revenue of the kings.
14เนื่องจากพวกเราพึ่งพาราชสำนักในการเลี้ยงชีพ จึงไม่สมควรที่จะทนเห็นกษัตริย์เสียเกียรติ พวกเราจึงส่งจดหมายมาแจ้งให้กษัตริย์ทราบ
14Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and announced to the king,
15เพื่อให้ค้นดูในหนังสือบันทึกของบรรพบุรุษของพระองค์ พระองค์จะพบและทราบจากหนังสือบันทึกนั้นว่า เมืองนี้เป็นเมืองที่ชอบกบฏ ก่อความเสียหายแก่กษัตริย์และมณฑลต่าง ๆ และเคยก่อกบฏมาแล้วในอดีต ด้วยเหตุนี้เมืองจึงถูกทำลาย
15that search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers; so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste.
16พวกเราขอแจ้งให้กษัตริย์ทราบว่า ถ้าสร้างเมืองนี้ขึ้นใหม่และสร้างกำแพงเสร็จ พระองค์จะไม่มีดินแดนในครอบครองทางฟากแม่น้ำอีกเลย
16We announce to the king that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, by this means thou shalt have no portion beyond the River.'
17กษัตริย์จึงส่งคำตอบถึงเรฮูม เสนาบดี ชิมชัย อาลักษณ์ และพรรคพวกคนอื่น ๆ ที่อาศัยอยู่ในสะมาเรียและดินแดนส่วนอื่น ๆ ฟากแม่น้ำว่า ขอให้มีสันติสุข
17Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the commander, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the River: 'Peace, and now
18จดหมายที่พวกท่านส่งมาให้เรา มีผู้อ่านให้เราฟังอย่างชัดเจนแล้ว
18the letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
19เราสั่งให้ค้นบันทึก และพบว่าเมืองนี้เคยลุกฮือสู้กษัตริย์ ก่อกบฏและจลาจลมาแล้วในอดีต
19And I decreed, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
20ทั้งยังเคยมีกษัตริย์ที่ทรงอำนาจปกครองเยรูซาเล็มและดินแดนฟากแม่น้ำทั้งหมด ผู้คนจ่ายบรรณาการ ภาษีศุลกากร และค่าผ่านทางให้กษัตริย์เหล่านั้น
20There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, impost, and toll, was paid unto them.
21จงออกคำสั่งให้คนเหล่านี้หยุดงาน และห้ามสร้างเมืองนี้ขึ้นใหม่จนกว่าเราจะออกคำสั่ง
21Make ye now a decree to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until a decree shall be made by me.
22จงระวัง อย่าชักช้าในการดำเนินการ จะปล่อยให้ความเสียหายเพิ่มขึ้นจนเป็นภัยแก่กษัตริย์ทั้งหลายไปทำไม
22And take heed that ye be not slack herein; why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?'
23เมื่อมีผู้อ่านสำเนาจดหมายของกษัตริย์อารทาเซอร์ซีสให้เรฮูม ชิมชัย อาลักษณ์ และพรรคพวกฟัง พวกเขาก็รีบไปหาชาวยิวที่กรุงเยรูซาเล็ม แล้วใช้อาวุธบังคับให้หยุดงาน
23Then when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
