1I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
1Ik, de gevangene voor de zaak des Heren, vermaan u dus, dat gij u gedraagt overeenkomstig uw roeping;
2With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
2dat gij elkander in liefde verdraagt met alle ootmoedigheid, zachtheid en geduld;
3Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
3dat gij uw best doet, de eenheid des geestes te bewaren door de band van de vrede.
4There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
4Eén lichaam en één geest, zoals gij ook geroepen zijt tot één hoop, die aan uw roeping ontspruit;
5One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
5één Heer, één geloof, één doopsel;
6One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
6één God en Vader van allen, die boven alles, door alles, en in alles is.
7But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
7Aan ieder van ons is de genade geschonken naar de maat, die Christus heeft toegemeten.
8Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
8Daarom wordt er gezegd: “Opgestegen ten hoge, Heeft Hij gevangenen buitgemaakt, Gaven uitgedeeld aan de mensen.”
9(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
9Welnu, dit “Hij is opgestegen,” wat betekent het anders, dan dat Hij ook is neergedaald naar de onderste delen der aarde.
10He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
10Hij, die is neergedaald, is Dezelfde als Hij, die hoog boven alle hemelen is opgestegen, om alles tot volheid te brengen.
11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
11Hijzelf is het geweest, die sommigen tot apostelen heeft aangesteld, anderen tot profeten, evangelisten, herders en leraars;
12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
12maar met het doel, om de heiligen tot volmaakte plichtsvervulling te brengen, om op te bouwen het Lichaam van Christus;
13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
13tot de tijd, dat wij allen tot de eenheid des geloofs en der kennis van Gods Zoon zijn gekomen, een volwassen man zijn geworden, en de mannenmaat van den volmaakten Christus hebben bereikt.
14That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
14Dan zullen we geen onmondige kinderen meer zijn, die heen en weer worden geslingerd en voortgestuwd door elke windvlaag van lering, door het bedrog van de mensen, door sluwe verleiding tot dwaling.
15But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
15Maar we zullen de waarheid bewaren in liefde, en zó in ieder opzicht opgroeien voor Hem, voor Christus, die het Hoofd is.
16From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
16Door Hem wordt het ganse lichaam samengevoegd en samengehouden, omdat elk gewricht zijn taak vervult met de kracht, die ieder lid in ‘t bijzonder is toegemeten; en zó voltrekt zich de groei van het lichaam tot eigen opbouw in liefde.
17This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
17Daarom zeg ik en bezweer ik u in den Heer, dat gij niet langer een leven moogt leiden, zoals de heidenen in hun ijdele gezindheid dit doen.
18Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
18Want hun verstand is verduisterd en ze zijn vervreemd van het leven van God, omdat er onwetendheid onder hen heerst en hun hart is verstokt.
19Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
19Ze hebben zich afgestompt en zich aan losbandigheid overgegeven, zodat ze uit hebzucht allerlei ontucht bedrijven.
20But ye have not so learned Christ;
20Maar zó hebt gij Christus niet leren kennen.
21If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
21Gij hebt toch van Hem gehoord, en zijt in Hem onderwezen, wat de waarheid in Jesus is:
22That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
22met betrekking tot uw vroeger gedrag moet gij den ouden mens afleggen, die door bedriegelijke begeerten te gronde gaat;
23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
23gij moet u vernieuwen naar de inwendige geest;
24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
24gij moet den nieuwen mens aantrekken, die naar Gods beeld is geschapen in ware gerechtigheid en heiligheid.
25Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
25Legt daarom de leugen af en spreekt de waarheid tot den naaste, ieder voor zich; want ledematen zijn we van elkander.
26Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
26Wordt gij toornig, zondigt dan niet; de zon ga niet onder over uw toorn;
27Neither give place to the devil.
27geeft geen vrij spel aan den duivel.
28Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
28De dief mag voortaan niet meer stelen, maar moet arbeiden, om met eigen handen de kost te verdienen, en iets over te houden, om het weg te schenken aan wie er behoefte aan heeft.
29Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
29Uit uw mond kome geen vuile taal, maar goede woorden alleen, die zo nodig stichten kunnen, zodat ze voordeel brengen aan hen die ze horen.
30And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
30Bedroeft ook niet Gods heiligen Geest, waarmee gij verzegeld zijt voor de Dag der Verlossing.
31Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
31Verre van u alle bitterheid, gramschap, toorn, geschreeuw, laster en alle andere boosheid.
32And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
32Maar weest minzaam en hartelijk jegens elkander; vergeeft elkander, gelijk ook God u door Christus vergiffenis heeft geschonken.
