1南部地方に住むカナン人、アラドの王は、イスラエルがアタリムの道を進んで来たと聞き、イスラエルと戦って、そのうち何人かを捕虜にした。
1And when king Arad the Chanaanite, who dwelt towards the south, had heard this, to wit, that Israel was come by the way of the spies, he fought against them, and overcoming them carried off their spoils.
2イスラエルは主に誓願を立てた。「この民を私の手に渡してくださるなら、彼らの町々を聖絶します。」
2But Israel binding himself by vow to the Lord, said: It thou wilt deliver this people into my hand, I will utterly destroy their cities.
3主はイスラエルの願いを聞き、カナン人を彼らの手に渡された。イスラエルは彼らとその町々を聖絶した。それで、その場所はホルマ と呼ばれた。
3And the Lord heard the prayers of Israel, and delivered up the Chanaanite, and they cut them off and destroyed their cities: and they called the name of that place Horma, that is to say, Anathema.
4彼らはエドムの地を迂回するため、ホル山から紅海への道を進んだ。しかし民は旅のために気力を失った。
4And they marched from mount Hor, by the way that leadeth to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom. And the people began to be weary of their journey and labour:
5民は神とモーセに逆らって言った。「なぜ私たちをエジプトから上らせ、この荒野で死なせようとするのか。パンも水もない。私たちはこの粗末な食物にうんざりしている。」
5And speaking against God and Moses, they said: Why didst thou bring us out of Egypt, to die in the wilderness? There is no bread, nor have we any waters: our soul now loatheth this very light food.
6主は民の中に毒蛇を送られた。蛇は民をかみ、イスラエルの多くの者が死んだ。
6Wherefore the Lord sent among the people fiery serpents, which bit them and killed many of them.
7民はモーセのもとに来て言った。「私たちは主とあなたに逆らって語り、罪を犯しました。蛇を取り去ってくださるよう主に祈ってください。」そこでモーセは民のために祈った。
7Upon which they came to Moses, and said: We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and thee: pray that he may take away these serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
8主はモーセに言われた。「毒蛇を作り、旗竿の上に掲げなさい。かまれた者は、それを見れば生きる。」
8And the Lord said to him: Make brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: whosoever being struck shall look on it, shall live.
9モーセは青銅の蛇を作り、旗竿の上に掲げた。蛇にかまれた者も、青銅の蛇を仰ぎ見ると生きた。
9Moses therefore made a brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: which when they that were bitten looked upon, they were healed.
10イスラエルの子らは旅立ち、オボテに宿営した。
10And the children of Israel setting forwards camped in Oboth.
11彼らはオボテから旅立ち、モアブの東、日の出る方角の荒野にあるイエ・アバリムに宿営した。
11And departing thence they pitched their tents in Jeabarim, in the wilderness, that faceth Moab toward the east.
12そこから旅立ち、ゼレドの谷に宿営した。
12And removing from thence, they came to the torrent Zared:
13そこから旅立ち、アモリ人の領域から延びる荒野のアルノン川の向こう側に宿営した。アルノン川は、モアブとアモリ人の間を隔てるモアブの境界である。
13Which they left and encamped over against Arnon, which is in the desert and standeth out on the borders of the Amorrhite. For Arnon is the border of Moab, dividing the Moabites and the Amorrhites.
14それゆえ、 主の戦いの書 にはこう記されている。「スファのワヘブ、アルノンの谷々、
14Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord: As he did in the Red Sea, so will he do in the streams of Amen.
15谷々の斜面はアルの住まいへ傾き、モアブの境に寄りかかる。」
15The rocks of the torrents were bowed down that they might rest in Ar, and lie down in the borders of the Moabites.
16そこから彼らはベエルへ向かった。そこは、主がモーセに「民を集めなさい。わたしは彼らに水を与える」と言われた井戸である。
16When they went from that place, the well appeared whereof the Lord said to Moses: Gather the people together, and I will give them water.
17そのとき、イスラエルはこの歌を歌った。 「湧き上がれ、井戸よ。これに向かって歌え。
17Then Israel sung this song: Let the well spring up. They sung thereto:
18指導者たちが掘った井戸、 民の高貴な者たちが掘った井戸、 王笏と杖をもって掘った井戸。」 荒野から彼らはマタナへ進み、
18The well, which the princes dug, and the chiefs of the people prepared by the direction of the lawgiver, and with their staves. And they marched from the wilderness to Mathana.
19マタナからナハリエルへ、ナハリエルからバモテへ、
19From Mathana unto Nahaliel: from Nahaliel unto Bamoth.
20バモテから、モアブの野にある谷へ、荒れ地を見下ろすピスガの頂へ進んだ。
20From Bamoth, is a valley in the country of Moab, to the top of Phasga, which looked towards the desert.
21イスラエルはアモリ人の王シホンに使者を遣わして言った。
21And Israel sent messengers to Sehon king of the Amorrhites, saying:
22「あなたの国を通らせてください。畑やぶどう園には入らず、井戸の水も飲みません。あなたの領土を通り過ぎるまで、王の道を進みます。」
22I beseech thee that I may have leave to pass through thy land: we will not go aside into the fields or the vineyards, we will not drink waters of the wells, we will go the king’s highway, till we be past thy borders.
23しかしシホンは、イスラエルが自分の領土を通ることを許さなかった。彼は全軍を集めて荒野へ出てイスラエルを迎え撃ち、ヤハツで戦った。
23And he would not grant that Israel should pass by his borders: but rather gathering an army, went forth to meet them in the desert, and came to Jasa, and fought against them.
24イスラエルは彼を剣の刃で打ち、アルノン川からヤボク川まで、アンモン人の領域に至る地を占領した。アンモン人の境界は堅固だった。
24And he was slain by them with the edge of the sword, and they possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jeboc, and to the confines of the children of Ammon: for the borders of the Ammonites, were kept with a strong garrison.
25イスラエルはこれらの町々をすべて取り、アモリ人のすべての町、すなわちヘシュボンと周辺の村々に住んだ。
25So Israel took all his cities, and dwelt in the cities of the Amorrhite, to wit, in Hesebon, and in the villages thereof.
26ヘシュボンはアモリ人の王シホンの町であった。シホンは先のモアブの王と戦い、アルノン川に至るまで、その領土をすべて奪っていた。
26Hesebon was the city of Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, who fought against the king of Moab: and took all the land, that had been of his dominions, as far as the Arnon.
27それゆえ、歌を詠む者たちは言う。 「ヘシュボンへ来よ。 シホンの町を建て、堅くせよ。
27Therefore it is said in the proverb: Come into Hesebon, let the city of Sehon be built and set up:
28火がヘシュボンから、 炎がシホンの町から出た。 それはモアブのアルを、 アルノンの高き所の支配者たちを焼き尽くした。
28A fire is gone out of Hesebon, a flame from the city of Sehon, and hath consumed Ar of the Moabites, and the inhabitants of the high places of the Arnon.
29モアブよ、災いだ。 ケモシュの民よ、おまえは滅びる。 ケモシュは息子たちを逃亡者とし、 娘たちを捕虜とし、 アモリ人の王シホンに渡した。
29Woe to thee Moab: thou art undone, O people of Chamos. He hath given his sons to flight, and his daughters into captivity to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites.
30私たちは彼らを射倒した。 ヘシュボンはディボンまで滅び、 私たちはノファまで荒廃させ、 メデバにまで攻め及んだ。」
30Their yoke is perished from Hesebon unto Dibon, they came weary to Nophe, and unto Medaba.
31こうしてイスラエルはアモリ人の地に住んだ。
31So Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorrhite.
32モーセはヤゼルを偵察させた。イスラエルはその周辺の村々を取り、そこにいたアモリ人を追い出した。
32And Moses sent some to take a view of Jazer: and they took the villages of it, and conquered the inhabitants.
33彼らは向きを変え、バシャンへの道を上った。バシャンの王オグは全軍を率いて迎え撃つために出て来て、エドレイで戦った。
33And they turned themselves, and went up by the way of Basan, and Og the king of Basan came against them with all his people, to fight in Edrai.
34主はモーセに言われた。「彼を恐れてはならない。わたしは彼と全軍、その地をあなたの手に渡した。ヘシュボンに住んでいたアモリ人の王シホンにしたのと同じように、彼にも行いなさい。」
34And the Lord said to Moses: Fear him not, for I have delivered him and all his people, and his country into thy hand: and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, the inhabitant of Hesebon.
35彼らはオグとその息子たち、全軍を、一人も残さず打ち倒し、その地を占領した。
35So they slew him also with his sons, and all his people, not letting any one escape, and they possessed his land.
