Proverbs 28
JPS Tanakh (Jewish Publication Society, 1917)
Baibala Hemolele (Hawaiian Bible, 1868 revision)
1The wicked flee when no man pursueth; but the righteous are secure as a young lion.
1HOOHEE wale ka mea hewa, aohe mea e hahai ana; O ka poe pono hoi, wiwo ole lakou me he liona la.
2For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof; but by a man of understanding and knowledge established order shall long continue.
2No ka hewa o ka aina, nui no kolaila poe alii; A ma ke kanaka noonoo a ike hoi e paa loihi ana no ia.
3A poor man that oppresseth the weak is like a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.
3O ke kanaka ilihune e hookaumaha ana i ka poe ilihune, Oia ka ua e hoopau ana i ka ai a pau.
4They that forsake the law praise the wicked; but such as keep the law contend with them.
4O ka poe haalele i ke kanawai, hoomaikai no lakou i ka mea hewa: O ka poe malama hoi i ke kanawai, ku e aku no i ua poe la.
5Evil men understand not justice; but they that seek the LORD understand all things.
5Aole i ike ka poe aia i ka hoopono; A o ka poe imi ia Iehova, ike no i na mea a pau.
6Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.
6E aho ka mea ilihune ke hele oia ma ka pololei, I ka mea waiwai i hookekee i kona aoao.
7A wise son observeth the teaching; but he that is a companion of gluttonous men shameth his father.
7O ka mea malama i ke kanawai, he keiki naauao ia; O ka hoa no ka poe hookai wale, oia ka i hoohilahila i kona makuakane.
8He that augmenteth his substance by interest and increase, gathereth it for him that is gracious to the poor.
8O ka mea hoonui i kona waiwai ma ka uku kuala a me ke kaili wale, E hooiliili oia ia mea na ka mea e aloha aku i ka poe ilihune.
9He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.
9O ka mea haliu aku i kona pepeiao aole hoolono i ke kanawai, E hoopailuaia kana pule.
10Whoso causeth the upright to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit; but the whole-hearted shall inherit good.
10O ka mea kai hewa aku i ka poe pololei ma ka aoao hewa, Ma kona lua iho oia e haule ai; A o ka poe pololei hoi, e ili mai ka maikai no lakou.
11The rich man is wise in his own eyes; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him through.
11Ua naauao no ke kanaka waiwai i kona manao iho; Aka, o ka mea ilihune a naauao hoi, oia ka i ike aku ia ia.
12When the righteous exult, there is great glory; but when the wicked rise, men must be sought for.
12I ka hauoli ana o ka poe pono, nui ka hanohano; A i ke ku ana'e o ka poe hewa, ua hunaia ke kanaka.
13He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper; but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy.
13O ka mea huna i kona hewa iho, aole oia e pomaikai; Aka, o ka mea hooia a haalele hoi, e alohaia mai oia,
14Happy is the man that feareth alway; but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into evil.
14Pomaikai ke kanaka ke mau aku kona makau; O ka mea hoopaakiki i kona naau, e haule oia i ka popilikia.
15As a roaring lion, and a ravenous bear; so is a wicked ruler over a poor people.
15O ka liona uwo a me ka bea holoholo, Oia ke alii hewa maluna o na kanaka ilihune.
16The prince that lacketh understanding is also a great oppressor; but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.
16O ke alii naauao ole, nui kona hookaumaha ana; O ka mea hoowahawaha i ka makee waiwai, e loihi no kona mau la.
17A man that is laden with the blood of any person shall hasten his steps unto the pit; none will support him.
17O ke kanaka hewa i ke koko o kekahi, E holo oia i ka lua; mai keakea kekahi ia ia.
18Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved; but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.
18O ka mea hele pololei e ola oia; O ka mea hookekee i kona aoao, e haule koke no ia.
19He that tilleth his ground shall have plenty of bread; but he that followeth after vain things shall have poverty enough.
19O ka mea mahi i ka aina e maona oia i ka ai; O ka mea hoopili mea ai mahope o ka poe lapuwale e piha oia i ka ilihune.
20A faithful man shall abound with blessings; but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be unpunished.
20O ke kanaka hooiaio, nui wale kona mau mea e pomaikai ai; O ka mea holo kiki mahope o ka waiwai, aole e ole kona hala.
21To have respect of persons is not good; for a man will transgress for a piece of bread.
21O ka manao ana i ko ke kanaka kino, aole ia he maikai; No kahi apana ai e lawehala no ua kanaka la.
22He that hath an evil eye hasteneth after riches, and knoweth not that want shall come upon him.
22O ka mea hooikaika ma ka waiwai, he maka ino kona, Aole oia e ike o ka ilihune kana mea e loaa ai.
23He that rebuketh a man shall in the end find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue.
23O ka mea ao aku i ke kanaka, mahope iho e loaa ia ia ka lokomaikaiia mai, Mamua o ka mea malimali me kona alelo.
24Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith: 'It is no transgression', the same is the companion of a destroyer.
24O ke mea kaili wale i ka kona makuakane a me ka kona makuwahine, Me ka i ana ae, Aole ia he hewa, Oia ka hoa no ka pepehi kanaka.
25He that is of a greedy spirit stirreth up strife; but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be abundantly gratified.
25O ka mea i haaheo ka naau, oia ka i hookonokono i ka hakaka; O ka mea paulele ia Iehova e lako loa oia.
26He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool; but whoso walketh wisely, he shall escape.
26O ka mea paulele i kona naau iho, oia ka mea naaupo: O ka mea hele ma ka naauao, e hoopakeleia oia.
27He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack; but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.
27O ka mea haawi wale na ka mea ilihune, aole oia e nele; A o ka mea i uhi ae i kona mau maka, e nui kona hoinoia mai.
28When the wicked rise, men hide themselves; but when they perish, the righteous increase.
28I ke ku ana o ka poe hewa, ua huna ke kanaka ia ia iho; A make lakou, alaila mahuahua ka poe pono.
