1And it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.
1ต่อมานาหาช กษัตริย์ของชาวอัมโมน สิ้นพระชนม์ บุตรชายขึ้นครองราชย์แทน
2And David said: 'l will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.' So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
2ดาวิดกล่าวว่า “ข้าจะแสดงความเมตตาต่อฮานูนบุตรชายนาหาช เพราะบิดาของเขาเคยแสดงความเมตตาต่อข้า” ดาวิดจึงส่งคณะผู้แทนไปแสดงความเสียใจต่อฮานูนเรื่องบิดาของเขา เมื่อพวกเขาเข้าดินแดนชาวอัมโมน ก็ไปหาฮานูนเพื่อปลอบใจ
3But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun: 'Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?'
3แต่บรรดาผู้นำชาวอัมโมนพูดกับฮานูนว่า “ท่านคิดจริงหรือว่าดาวิดส่งคนมาปลอบใจเพราะต้องการให้เกียรติพ่อของท่าน? คนของเขามาเพื่อสำรวจแผ่นดิน หาทางทำลาย และสอดแนมต่างหาก”
4So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their hips, and sent them away.
4ฮานูนจึงจับคนของดาวิดมาโกนหนวดเครา ตัดเสื้อผ้าของพวกเขาตรงระดับบั้นท้ายจนเปิดเปลือย แล้วปล่อยกลับไป
5Then there went certain persons, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them; for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said: 'Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.'

6And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Aram-naharaim, and out of Aram-maacah, and out of Zobah.
6เมื่อชาวอัมโมนรู้ว่าตนทำให้ดาวิดเกลียดชัง ฮานูนกับชาวอัมโมนจึงส่งเงิน 1,000 ตะลันต์ ไปจ้างรถรบและทหารม้าจากเมโสโปเตเมีย อารัมมาอาคาห์ และโศบาห์
7So they hired them thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah and his people; who came and encamped before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
7พวกเขาจ้างรถรบ 32,000 คัน กษัตริย์แห่งมาอาคาห์ก็มาพร้อมกำลังพล และตั้งค่ายใกล้เมเดบา ส่วนชาวอัมโมนก็รวบรวมกำลังจากเมืองต่าง ๆ ออกมารบ
8And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
8เมื่อดาวิดได้ข่าว เขาส่งโยอาบไปพร้อมกองทัพทั้งหมดซึ่งมีนักรบกล้าหาญ
9And the children of Ammon came out and put the battle in array at the gate of the city; and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.
9ชาวอัมโมนตั้งแนวรบที่ประตูเมือง ส่วนบรรดากษัตริย์ที่มาช่วยแยกไปตั้งแนวรบในทุ่ง
10Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Arameans.
10โยอาบเห็นว่าศัตรูตั้งแนวรบขนาบหน้าและหลัง จึงเลือกทหารอิสราเอลที่เก่งที่สุดส่วนหนึ่งไปตั้งแนวรบกับชาวซีเรีย
11And the rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother, and they put themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
11ทหารที่เหลือเขามอบให้อาบีชัยพี่น้องของโยอาบคุมเพื่อสู้กับชาวอัมโมน
12And he said: 'If the Arameans be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me; but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.
12โยอาบบอกว่า “ถ้าชาวซีเรียมีกำลังเหนือข้า เจ้าจงมาช่วยข้า แต่ถ้าชาวอัมโมนมีกำลังเหนือเจ้า ข้าจะไปช่วยเจ้า
13Be of good courage, and let us prove strong for our people, and for the cities of our God; and the LORD do that which seemeth Him good.'
13จงกล้าหาญและเข้มแข็งเพื่อประชาชนของเราและเมืองต่าง ๆ ของพระเจ้าของเรา ขอให้พระยาห์เวห์ทรงทำตามที่พระองค์เห็นว่าดี”
14So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh unto the battle to meet the Arameans; and they fled before him.
14โยอาบกับกองทหารเข้าประชิดชาวซีเรียเพื่อรบ ชาวซีเรียก็หนีไป
15And when the children of Ammon saw that the Arameans were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
15เมื่อชาวอัมโมนเห็นชาวซีเรียหนี พวกเขาก็หนีอาบีชัยพี่น้องของโยอาบกลับเข้าเมือง แล้วโยอาบกลับเยรูซาเล็ม
16And when the Arameans saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and brought out the Arameans that were beyond the River, with Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer at their head.
16ชาวซีเรียเห็นว่าตนแพ้อิสราเอล จึงส่งคนไปเรียกชาวซีเรียที่อยู่อีกฟากแม่น้ำ ออกมา โดยมีโชฟัคแม่ทัพของฮาดัดเอเซอร์นำทัพ
17And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Arameans, they fought with him.

18And the Arameans fled before Israel; and David slew of the Arameans the men of seven thousand chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

19And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and served him; neither would the Arameans help the children of Ammon any more.
19เมื่อคนของฮาดัดเอเซอร์เห็นว่าตนแพ้อิสราเอล ก็ทำสัญญาสงบศึกกับดาวิดและรับใช้เขา ตั้งแต่นั้นชาวซีเรียไม่ช่วยชาวอัมโมนอีก
