1「見よ、炉のように燃える日が来る。その時、高ぶる者と悪を行う者は皆、刈り残された茎のようになる。来るべきその日は彼らを焼き尽くし、根も枝も残さない」と万軍の主は言われる。
1For behold the day shall come kindled as a furnace: and all the proud, and all that do wickedly shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall set them on fire, saith the Lord of hosts, it shall not leave them root, nor branch.
2「しかし、私の名を畏れるあなたがたには、義の太陽が昇り、その翼には癒しがある。あなたがたは牛舎から放たれた子牛のように跳びはねる。
2But unto you that fear my name, the Sun of justice shall arise, and health in his wings: and you shall go forth, and shall leap like calves of the herd.
3あなたがたは悪者を踏みつける。私が定める日、彼らはあなたがたの足の下で灰となる」と万軍の主は言われる。
3And you shall tread down the wicked when they shall be ashes under the sole of your feet in the day that I do this, saith the Lord of hosts.
4「私のしもべモーセの律法、すなわち私がホレブでイスラエル全体のために彼に命じた定めと規定を覚えよ。
4Remember the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel, the precepts, and judgments.
5見よ、主の大いなる恐るべき日が来る前に、私は預言者エリヤをあなたがたに遣わす。
5Behold I will send you Elias the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
6彼は父たちの心を子どもたちに向けさせ、子どもたちの心を父たちに向けさせる。そうでなければ、私は来て、のろいをもって地を打つ。」
6And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers: lest I come, and strike the earth with anathema.
