John 11

World English Bible
Douay-Rheims Bible, American Edition (1899)
1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.
1Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister.
2It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
2(And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”
3His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
4But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”
4And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.
5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.
6When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.
6When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.
7Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”
7Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.
8The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”
8The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?
9Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
9Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:
10But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”
10But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.
11He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”
11These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.
12The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
12His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.
13But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.
14So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.
14Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.
15I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”
15And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.
16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, that we may die with him.”
16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.
17Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave.
18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.
18(Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)
19Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
19And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.
20Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.
21Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.
21Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”
22But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
23Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.
24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
24Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.
25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.
25Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:
26Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
26And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?
27She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”
27She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.
28When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling you.”
28And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.
29When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him.
29She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.
30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.
30For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.
31Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
31The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.
32Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”
32When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled,
33Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,
34and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
34And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.
35Jesus wept.
35And Jesus wept.
36The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”
36The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.
37Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”
37But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?
38Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.
39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
39Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.
40Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”
40Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?
41So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.
41They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.
42I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”
42And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
43When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.
44He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”
44And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.
45Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him.
45Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.
46But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
46But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.
47The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.
47The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?
48If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
48If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.
49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,
49But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.
50nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”
50Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
51And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.
52and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
52And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed.
53So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.
53From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.
54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.
54Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.
55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
55And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves.
56Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”
56They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day?
57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
57And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.
