1ʻOku tekeʻi atu ʻae houhau ʻe he tali fakavaivai: ka ʻoku fakatupu ʻae ʻita ʻi he lea fakamamahi.
1A soft answer turneth away wrath; but a grievous word stirreth up anger.
2ʻOku ngāue totonu ʻaki ʻae ʻilo ʻe he ʻelelo ʻoe poto: ka ʻoku malingi ʻae vale mei he ngutu ʻoe vale.
2The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright; but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.
3ʻOku ʻi he potu kotoa pē ʻae fofonga ʻo Sihova, ʻo ne ʻafioʻi ʻae kovi mo e lelei.
3The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch upon the evil and the good.
4Ko e ʻelelo fakamoʻui ko e ʻakau ia ʻoe moʻui: pea ka talangataʻa ia ko e maumau ia ʻoe laumālie.
4A soothing tongue is a tree of life; but perverseness therein is a wound to the spirit.
5ʻOku fehiʻa ʻae vale ki he akonaki ʻa ʻene tamai: ka ʻoku fakapotopoto ia ʻaia ʻoku tokanga ki he valoki.
5A fool despiseth his father's correction; but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
6ʻOku ai ʻae koloa lahi ʻi he fale ʻoe māʻoniʻoni: ka ʻoku ai ʻae mamahi ʻi he koloa ʻae angahala.
6In the house of the righteous is much treasure; but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.
7ʻOku tufa atu ʻae poto ʻe he loungutu ʻoe poto: ka ʻoku ʻikai ke fai pehē ʻe he loto ʻoe vale.
7The lips of the wise disperse knowledge; but the heart of the foolish is not stedfast.
8Ko e meʻa fakalielia kia Sihova ʻae feilaulau ʻae angahala: ka ko e lotu ʻae angatonu ʻoku ne fiemālie ai.
8The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD; but the prayer of the upright is His delight.
9Ko e meʻa fakalielia kia Sihova ʻae hala ʻoe angakovi: ka ʻoku ne ʻofa kiate ia ʻoku muimui ki he māʻoniʻoni.
9The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD; but He loveth him that followeth after righteousness.
10Ko e meʻa fakamamahi ʻae tautea kiate ia kuo liʻaki ʻae hala: pea ko ia ʻoku fehiʻa ki he valoki ʻe mate ia.
10There is grievous correction for him that forsaketh the way; and he that hateth reproof shall die.
11ʻOku ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova ʻa hētesi pea mo e fakaʻauha: kae muʻa hake ʻae loto ʻoe fānau ʻae tangata!
11The nether-world and Destruction are before the LORD; how much more then the hearts of the children of men!
12ʻOku ʻikai ʻofa ʻae tangata manuki kiate ia ʻoku valokiʻi ia: pea ʻoku ʻikai fie ʻalu atu ia ki he poto.
12A scorner loveth not to be reproved; he will not go unto the wise.
13ʻOku fakafiefiaʻi ʻae mata ʻe he loto ʻoku fiemālie: ka ʻoku maumauʻi ʻae laumālie ʻe he mamahi ʻoe loto.
13A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance; but by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken.
14ʻOku kumi ki he poto ʻe he loto ʻoʻona ʻoku faʻa ʻilo: ka ʻoku kai ʻae vale ʻe he ngutu ʻoe kakai vale.
14The heart of him that hath discernment seeketh knowledge; but the mouth of fools feedeth on folly.
15ʻOku kovi ʻae ʻaho kotoa pē ʻonautolu ʻoku mamahi: ka ʻoku fai kātoanga maʻuaipē ia ʻaia ʻoku loto fiemālie.
15All the days of the poor are evil; but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.
16ʻOku lelei lahi hake ʻae meʻa siʻi mo e manavahē kia Sihova, ʻi he koloa lahi ʻoku maʻu mo e kovi.
16Better is little with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure and turmoil therewith.
17ʻOku lelei hake ʻae meʻakai ʻaki ʻae louʻakau pea ai mo e ʻofa, ʻi he kai ha pulu kuo fafanga, kae maʻu mo e fehiʻa.
17Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.
18ʻOku fakatupu ʻe he tangata faʻa ʻita ʻae feʻiteʻitani: ka ʻoku lolomi ʻae feʻiteʻitani ʻe ia ʻoku fakatotoka ki he ʻita.
18A wrathful man stirreth up discord; but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.
19ʻOku tatau ʻae hala ʻoe tangata fakapikopiko mo e ʻā ʻakau talatala: ka ʻoku hangamālie ʻae hala ʻoe māʻoniʻoni.
19The way of the sluggard is as though hedged by thorns; but the path of the upright is even.
20ʻOku fakafiefiaʻi ʻae tamai ʻe he foha ʻoku poto: ka ʻoku fehiʻa ʻae tangata vale ki heʻene faʻē.
20A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish man despiseth his mother.
21Ko e vale ko e fakafiefia ia kiate ia ʻoku taʻemaʻu ʻae poto: ka ʻoku ʻeveʻeva ʻi he angatonu ʻae tangata ʻoku faʻa ʻilo.
21Folly is joy to him that lacketh understanding; but a man of discernment walketh straightforwards.
22ʻOku ʻikai hoko ʻae ngaahi meʻa kuo tuʻutuʻuni, ko e meʻa ʻi he masiva fakakaukau: ka ʻi he tokolahi hono kau fakakaukauʻi ʻoku toki maʻu ai ia.
22For want of counsel purposes are frustrated; but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.
23ʻOku maʻu ʻe he tangata ʻae fiefia ʻi he lea ʻa hono ngutu: pea ko e lea ʻoku fai ʻi hono kuonga totonu, hono ʻikai lelei fau ia!
23A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth; and a word in due season, how good is it!
24ʻOku māʻolunga ʻae hala ʻoe moʻui kiate kinautolu ʻoku poto, koeʻuhi ke nau hao mei heli ʻoku ʻi lalo.
24The path of life goeth upward for the wise, that he may depart from the nether-world beneath.
25ʻE fakaʻauha ʻe Sihova ʻae fale ʻoe fielahi: ka ʻe fokotuʻumaʻu ʻe ia ʻae kauhala ʻoe fefine kuo mate hono husepāniti.
25The LORD will pluck up the house of the proud; but He will establish the border of the widow.
26Ko e meʻa fakalielia kia Sihova ʻae ngaahi mahalo ʻae angakovi: ka ko e ngaahi lea ʻae māʻoniʻoni ko e ngaahi lea ia ʻoku lelei.
26The thoughts of wickedness are an abomination to the LORD; but words of pleasantness are pure.
27Ko ia ʻoku manumanu ki he koloa, ʻoku fakafiuʻi ʻe ia hono fale ʻoʻona; ka ko ia ʻoku fehiʻa ki he ngaahi meʻa foaki ʻe moʻui ia.
27He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live.
28ʻOku fakakaukau ʻe he loto ʻoe māʻoniʻoni ʻae lea te ne tali ʻaki: ka ʻoku malingi mei he ngutu ʻoe angahala ʻae ngaahi meʻa kovi.
28The heart of the righteous studieth to answer; but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.
29ʻOku mamaʻo ʻaupito ʻa Sihova mei he angahala: ka ʻoku ne ongoʻi ʻae lotu ʻae māʻoniʻoni.
29The LORD is far from the wicked; but He heareth the prayer of the righteous.
30ʻOku fiefia ʻae loto ʻi he maama ʻoe mata: pea ʻoku tupu ʻi he ongoongolelei ʻae huhuʻa ʻoe hui.
30The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart; and a good report maketh the bones fat.
31Ko e telinga ʻoku fakafanongo ki he valoki fakamoʻui, ʻe nofomaʻu ia ʻi he haʻohaʻonga ʻoe poto.
31The ear that hearkeneth to the reproof of life abideth among the wise.
32Ko ia ʻoku manuki ki he akonaki, ʻoku ne fehiʻa ki hono laumālie ʻoʻona: ka ko ia ʻoku fanongo ki he valoki, ʻoku maʻu ʻe ia ʻae loto poto.
32He that refuseth correction despiseth his own soul; but he that hearkeneth to reproof getteth understanding.
33Ko e manavahē kia Sihova, ko e akonaki ia ʻoe poto; pea ʻoku muʻomuʻa ʻae angavaivai ʻi he hakeakiʻi.
33The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour goeth humility.
