1さて、ペリシテ人はイスラエルと戦った。イスラエルの兵士たちはペリシテ人の前から逃げ、ギルボア山で討たれて倒れた。
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
2ペリシテ人はサウルとその息子たちに激しく迫り、サウルの息子ヨナタン、アビナダブ、マルキ・シュアを討った。
2The Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons, and they killed Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua.
3戦いはサウルに対して激しくなり、射手たちが彼に追いつき、サウルは彼らに追い詰められた。
3When the battle intensified against Saul, the archers overtook him and wounded him.
4その時、サウルは自分の武具持ちに言った。「あなたの剣を抜き、それで私を刺し貫け。あの割礼を受けていない者たちが来て、私を辱めないためだ。」しかし、彼の武具持ちは大いに恐れたため、そうしようとはしなかった。そこでサウルは自分の剣を取り、その上に倒れ伏した。
4Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run it through me, or these uncircumcised men will come and torture me!” But his armor-bearer was terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
5武具持ちは、サウルが死んだのを見て、自分も剣の上に倒れ伏して死んだ。
5When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword and died.
6こうしてサウルとその三人の息子は死に、彼の家は皆ともに死んだ。
6So Saul died together with his three sons and all his house.
7谷にいたすべてのイスラエルの人々は、彼らが逃げ去ったこと、またサウルとその息子たちが死んだことを見ると、自分たちの町々を捨てて逃げた。そしてペリシテ人が来て、そこに住んだ。
7When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
8翌日、ペリシテ人が殺された者たちから剥ぎ取るために来たとき、サウルとその息子たちがギルボア山に倒れているのを見つけた。
8The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
9彼らは彼から剥ぎ取り、彼の頭と鎧を取り、ペリシテ人の地の至る所に人を遣わして、彼らの偶像と民に知らせを伝えさせた。
9They stripped Saul, cut off his head, took his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among their people.
10彼らは彼の鎧を自分たちの神々の家に置き、彼の頭をダゴンの神殿に釘で打ち付けた。
10They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung his head in the temple of Dagon.
11ヤベシュ・ギルアドのすべての者が、ペリシテ人がサウルに行ったすべてのことを聞いたとき、
11When the people of Jabesh-gilead heard about everything the Philistines had done to Saul,
12勇士たちが皆立ち上がり、サウルの遺体と彼の息子たちの遺体を取り去って、ヤベシュへ持ち帰った。彼らはその骨をヤベシュの樫の木の下に葬り、七日間断食した。
12all their men of valor set out and retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days.
13サウルは、主に対して犯した背信の罪のゆえに死んだ。彼が主の言葉を守らず、また霊媒に相談して尋ね求めたからである。
13So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance,
14彼は主に尋ね求めなかったので、主は彼を死なせ、王権をエッサイの子ダビデに移された。
14and he failed to inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.
