Coptic New Testament
1After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for he would not walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
1ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲙⲉⲛⲉⲛⲥⲁ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲛⲁϥⲙⲟϣⲓ ⲡⲉ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ Ⲓⲏ̅ⲥ̅ ϧⲉⲛ ϯⲅⲁⲗⲓⲗⲉ⳿ⲁ ⲟⲩ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲛⲁϥⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲁⲛ ⲡⲉ ⳿ⲉⲙⲟϣⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ϯⲓⲟⲩⲇⲉ⳿ⲁ ϫⲉ ⲛⲁⲩⲕⲱϯ ⳿ⲛⲥⲱϥ ⲡⲉ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲛⲓⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ ⳿ⲉϧⲟⲑⲃⲉϥ.
2Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.
2ⲛⲁϥϧⲉⲛⲧ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⳿ⲡϣⲁⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲛⲓⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ ϯ⳿ⲥⲕⲏⲛⲟⲡⲏⲅⲓⲁ.
3And his brethren said to him: Pass from hence, and go into Judea; that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou dost.
3ⲡⲉϫⲱⲟⲩ ⲛⲁϥ ⲟⲩⲛ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲛⲉϥ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲑⲃⲉⲕ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲧⲁⲓ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲙⲁϣⲉ ⲛⲁⲕ ⳿ⲉϯⲓⲟⲩⲇⲉ⳿ⲁ ϩⲓⲛⲁ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲛⲉⲕⲙⲁⲑⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲛⲁⲩ ⳿ⲉⲛⲉⲕ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⲉⲧⲉⲕ⳿⳿ⲓⲣⲓ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲟⲩ.
4For there is no man that doth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, manifest thyself to the world.
4ⲟⲩ ⲅⲁⲣ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲣⲉ ⳿ϩⲗⲓ ⲉⲣϩⲱⲃ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲉⲧϩⲏⲡ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉϥⲕⲱϯ ⳿ⲛⲥⲱϥ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲉⲑⲟⲩⲱⲛϩ ⲓⲥϫⲉ ⳿ⲭⲛⲁⲉⲣ ⲛⲁⲓ ⲟⲩⲟⲛϩⲕ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲕⲟⲥⲙⲟⲥ.
5For neither did his brethren believe in him.
5ⲟⲩⲇⲉ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲛⲉϥⲕⲉ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⲛⲁⲩⲛⲁϩϯ ⳿ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲁⲛ ⲡⲉ.
6Then Jesus said to them: My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.
6ⲡⲉϫⲉ Ⲓⲏ̅ⲥ̅ ⲟⲩⲛ ⲛⲱⲟⲩ ϫⲉ ⲡⲁⲥⲏⲟⲩ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲧⲉϥ⳿ⲓ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛⲥⲏⲟⲩ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛⲑⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ϥⲥⲉⲃⲧⲱⲧ ⳿ⲛⲥⲏⲟⲩ ⲛⲓⲃⲉⲛ.
7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth: because I give testimony of it, that the works thereof are evil.
7⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲛ ⳿ϣϫⲟⲙ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲓⲕⲟⲥⲙⲟⲥ ⲙⲉⲥⲧⲉ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲇⲉ ⳿ϥⲙⲟⲥϯ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲓ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ϯⲉⲣⲙⲉⲑⲣⲉ ⲉⲑⲃⲏⲧϥ ϫⲉ ⲛⲉϥ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⲥⲉϩⲱⲟⲩ.
8Go you up to this festival day, but I go not up to this festival day: because my time is not accomplished.
8⳿ⲛⲑⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲙⲁϣⲉ ⲛⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϩⲣⲏⲓ ⳿ⲉ⳿ⲡϣⲁⲓ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛϯⲛⲁ⳿ⲓ ⲁⲛ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϩⲣⲏⲓ ⳿ⲉⲡⲓϣⲁⲓ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲧⲉ ⲡⲁⲥⲏⲟⲩ ⳿ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ϫⲱⲕ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ.
9When he had said these things, he himself stayed in Galilee.
9ⲛⲁⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲧⲁϥϫⲟⲧⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲑⲟϥ ϧⲉⲛ ϯ ⲅⲁⲗⲓⲗⲉ⳿ⲁ.
10But after his brethren were gone up, then he also went up to the feast, not openly, but, as it were, in secret.
10ϩⲟⲧⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲧⲁⲩϣⲉ ⲛⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϩⲣⲏⲓ ⳿ⲉ⳿ⲡϣⲁⲓ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲛⲉϥ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⲧⲟⲧⲉ ⳿ⲛⲑⲟϥ ϩⲱϥ ⲁϥ⳿Ⲓ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϩⲣⲏⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲟⲩⲱⲛϩ ⲁⲛ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ϩⲱⲥ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲭⲱⲡ.
11The Jews therefore sought him on the festival day, and said: Where is he?
11ⲛⲓⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ ⲟⲩⲛ ⲛⲁⲩⲕⲱϯ ⳿ⲛⲥⲱϥ ⲡⲉ ϧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲡϣⲁⲓ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲛⲁⲩϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲁϥⲑⲱⲛ ⲫⲏ ⳿ⲉⲧⲉ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩ.
12And there was much murmuring among the multitude concerning him. For some said: He is a good man. And others said: No, but he seduceth the people.
12ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲛⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲟⲩⲛⲓϣϯ ⳿ⲛ⳿ⲭⲣⲉⲙⲣⲉⲙ ⲡⲉ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲓⲙⲏϣ ⲉⲑⲃⲏⲧϥ ϩⲁⲛⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲙⲉⲛ ⲛⲁⲩϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲁⲅⲁⲑⲟⲥ ⲡⲉ ϩⲁⲛⲕⲉ ⲭⲱⲟⲩⲛⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲁⲩϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲛ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲁϥⲥⲱⲣⲉⲙ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲙⲏϣ.
13Yet no man spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews.
13⳿ⲙⲡⲉ ⳿ϩⲗⲓ ⲙⲉⲛⲧⲟⲓ ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲉⲑⲃⲏⲧϥ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲟⲩⲱⲛϩ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲉⲑⲃⲉ ⳿ⲧϩⲟϯ ⳿ⲛⲛⲓⲓⲟⲩⲇⲁⲓ.
14Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
14ϩⲏⲇⲏ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲧⲁ ⲡⲓϣⲁⲓ ⲉⲣⲫⲁϣⲓ ⲁϥ⳿Ⲓ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ Ⲓⲏ̅ⲥ̅ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϩⲣⲏⲓ ⳿ⲉⲡⲓⲉⲣⲫⲉⲓ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲛⲁϥϯ⳿ⲥⲃⲱ ⲡⲉ.
15And the Jews wondered, saying: How doth this man know letters, having never learned?

16Jesus answered them, and said: My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

18He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, he is true, and there is no injustice in him.

20Why seek you to kill me? The multitude answered, and said: Thou hast a devil; who seeketh to kill thee?

21Jesus answered, and said to them: One work I have done; and you all wonder:

22Therefore, Moses gave you circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and on the sabbath day you circumcise a man.

35The Jews therefore said among themselves: Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

37And on the last, and great day of the festivity, Jesus stood and cried, saying: If any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink.

39Now this he said of the Spirit which they should receive, who believed in him: for as yet the Spirit was not given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

40Of that multitude therefore, when they had heard these words of his, some said: This is the prophet indeed.
40ϩⲁⲛⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲓⲙⲏϣ ⲉⲧⲁⲩⲥⲱⲧⲉⲙ ⳿ⲉⲛⲁⲓⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲛⲁⲩϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲧⲁ⳿ⲫⲙⲏⲓ ⲫⲁⲓ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲓ⳿ⲡⲣⲟⲫⲏⲧⲏⲥ.
41Others said: This is the Christ. But some said: Doth the Christ come out of Galilee?
41ϩⲁⲛⲕⲉⲭⲱⲟⲩⲛⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲁⲩϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲫⲁⲓ ⲡⲉ Ⲡⲭ̅ⲥ̅ ϩⲁⲛⲕⲉⲭⲱⲟⲩⲛⲓ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲁⲩϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲙⲏ ⲁⲣⲉ Ⲡⲭ̅ⲥ̅ ⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ϯⲅⲁⲗⲓⲗⲉ⳿ⲁ.
42Doth not the scripture say: That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem the town where David was?
42ⲙⲏ ⲛⲉⲧⲁⲥϫⲟⲥ ⲁⲛ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ϯ⳿ⲅⲣⲁⲫⲏ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⳿ⲡ⳿ϫⲣⲟϫ ⳿ⲛⲇⲁⲩⲓⲇ ⲡⲉ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ϫⲉ ⲁⲣⲉ Ⲡⲭ̅ⲥ̅ ⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲃⲏⲑⲗⲉⲉⲙ ⲡⲓ ϯⲙⲓ ⳿ⲉⲛⲁⲣⲉ ⲇⲁⲩⲓⲇ ⲭⲏ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩ.
43So there arose a dissension among the people because of him.
43ⲟⲩ⳿ⲥⲭⲓⲥⲙⲁ ⲟⲩⲛ ⲁϥϣⲱⲡⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲓⲙⲏ ϣ ⲉⲑⲃⲏⲧϥ.
44And some of them would have apprehended him: but no man laid hands on him.
44ϩⲁⲛⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛϧⲏⲧⲟⲩ ⲛⲁⲩⲟⲩⲱϣ ⳿ⲉⲧⲁϩⲟϥ ⲡⲉ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉ ⳿ϩⲗⲓ ϣⲉⲛ ⲛⲉϥϫⲓϫ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϩⲣⲏⲓ ⳿ⲉϫⲱϥ.
45The ministers therefore came to the chief priests and the Pharisees. And they said to them: Why have you not brought him?
45ⲁⲩ⳿ⲓ ⲟⲩⲛ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲛⲓϩⲩⲡⲏⲣⲉⲧⲏⲥ ϩⲁ ⲛⲓⲁⲣⲭ ⲓⲉⲣⲉⲩⲥ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲛⲓⲫⲁⲣⲓⲥⲉⲟⲥ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲡⲉϫⲱⲟⲩ ⲛⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲛⲏ ⳿ⲉⲧⲉ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲉⲑⲃⲉⲟⲩ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛ⳿ⲉⲛϥ.
46The ministers answered: Never did man speak like this man.
46ⲁⲩⲉⲣⲟⲩⲱ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲛⲓϩⲩⲡⲏⲣⲉⲧⲏⲥ ⲉⲩϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉ ⲣⲱⲙⲓ ⲥⲁϫⲓ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ ⲉⲛⲉϩ.
47The Pharisees therefore answered them: Are you also seduced?
47ⲁⲩⲉⲣⲟⲩⲱ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲛⲓⲫⲁⲣⲓⲥⲉⲟⲥ ⲉⲩϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲙⲏ ⲁⲣⲉⲧⲉⲛⲥⲱⲣⲉⲙ ϩⲱⲧⲉⲛ.
48Hath any one of the rulers believed in him, or of the Pharisees?
48ⲙⲏ ⲁ ⳿ϩⲗⲓ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲓⲁⲣⲭⲱⲛ ⲛⲁϩϯ ⳿ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲓⲉ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲓⲫⲁⲣⲓⲥⲉⲟⲥ.
49But this multitude, that knoweth not the law, are accursed.
49ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲡⲁⲓⲙⲏϣ ⲉⲧⲉ⳿ⲛⲥⲉⲥⲱⲟⲩⲛ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲁⲛ ⲥⲉⲭⲏ ϧⲁ ⳿ⲡⲥⲁϩⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ.
50Nicodemus said to them, (he that came to him by night, who was one of them:)
50ⲡⲉϫⲉ ⲛⲓⲕⲟⲇⲏⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲱⲟⲩ ⲫⲏⲉⲧⲁϥ⳿Ⲓ ϩⲁ Ⲓⲏ̅ⲥ̅ ⳿ⲛϣⲟⲣⲡ ⳿ⲛϫⲱⲣϩ ⳿ⲉⲟⲩⲁⲓ ⲡⲉ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲛϧⲏⲧⲟⲩ.
51Doth our law judge any man, unless it first hear him, and know what he doth?
51ϫⲉ ⲙⲏ ⲡⲉⲛⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲁϯϩⲁⲡ ⳿ⲉⲡⲓⲣⲱⲙⲓ ⲁϥ⳿ϣⲧⲉⲙⲥⲱⲧⲉⲙ ⳿ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⳿ⲛϣⲟⲣⲡ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉϥ⳿ⲉⲙⲓ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩ ⲡⲉⲧⲉϥ⳿ⲓⲣⲓ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟϥ.
52They answered, and said to him: Art thou also a Galilean? Search the scriptures, and see, that out of Galilee a prophet riseth not.
52ⲁⲩⲉⲣⲟⲩⲱ ⲛⲁϥ ⲉⲩϫⲱ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲙⲏ ⳿ⲛⲑⲟⲕ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ϯⲅⲁⲗⲓⲗⲉ⳿ⲁ ϩⲱⲕ ϧⲟⲧϧⲉⲧ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲁⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲛ ⳿ⲡⲣⲟⲫⲏⲧⲏⲥ ⲛⲁⲧⲱⲛϥ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ϯⲅⲁⲗⲓⲗⲉ⳿ⲁ.
53And every man returned to his own house.
