1烏斯 地有一個人名叫 約伯 ；那人完全正直，敬畏上帝，遠離惡事。
1There was a man in the land of Hus, whose name was Job, and that man was simple and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil.
2他生了七個兒子，三個女兒。
2And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
3他的家產有七千羊，三千駱駝，五百對牛，五百母驢，並有許多僕婢。這人在東方人中就為至大。
3And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a family exceeding great: and this man was great among all the people of the east.
4他的兒子按着日子各在自己家裏設擺筵宴，就打發人去，請了他們的三個姊妹來，與他們一同吃喝。
4And his sons went, and made a feast by houses every one in his day. And sending they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5筵宴的日子過了， 約伯 打發人去叫他們自潔。他清早起來，按着他們眾人的數目獻燔祭；因為他說：「恐怕我兒子犯了罪，心中棄掉上帝。」 約伯 常常這樣行。
5And when the days of their feasting were gone about, Job sent to them, and sanctified them: and rising up early offered holocausts for every one of them. For he said: Lest perhaps my sons have sinned, and have blessed God in their hearts. So did Job all days.
6有一天，上帝的眾子來侍立在耶和華面前，撒但也來在其中。
6Now on a certain day when the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, Satan also was present among them.
7耶和華問撒但說：「你從哪裏來？」撒但回答說：「我從地上走來走去，往返而來。」
7And the Lord said to him: Whence comest thou? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.
8耶和華問撒但說：「你曾用心察看我的僕人 約伯 沒有？地上再沒有人像他完全正直，敬畏上帝，遠離惡事。」
8And the Lord said to him: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a simple and upright man, and fearing God, and avoiding evil?
9撒但回答耶和華說：「 約伯 敬畏上帝，豈是無故呢？
9And Satan answering, said: Doth Job fear God in vain?
10你豈不是四面圈上籬笆圍護他和他的家，並他一切所有的嗎？他手所做的都蒙你賜福；他的家產也在地上增多。
10Hast not thou made a fence for him, and his house, and all his substance round about, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession hath increased on the earth?
11你且伸手毀他一切所有的；他必當面棄掉你。」
11But stretch forth thy hand a little, and touch all that he hath, and see if he blesseth thee not to thy face.
12耶和華對撒但說：「凡他所有的都在你手中；只是不可伸手加害於他。」於是撒但從耶和華面前退去。
12Then the Lord said to Satan: Behold, all that he hath is in thy hand: only put not forth thy hand upon his person. And Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
13有一天， 約伯 的兒女正在他們長兄的家裏吃飯喝酒，
13Now upon a certain day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,
14有報信的來見 約伯 ，說：「牛正耕地，驢在旁邊吃草，
14There came a messenger to Job, and said: The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them,
15示巴 人忽然闖來，把牲畜擄去，並用刀殺了僕人；惟有我一人逃脫，來報信給你。」
15And the Sabeans rushed in, and took all away, and slew the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.
16他還說話的時候，又有人來說：「上帝從天上降下火來，將群羊和僕人都燒滅了；惟有我一人逃脫，來報信給你。」
16And while he was yet speaking, another came, and said: The fire of God fell from heaven, and striking the sheep and the servants, hath consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.
17他還說話的時候，又有人來說：「 迦勒底 人分作三隊忽然闖來，把駱駝擄去，並用刀殺了僕人；惟有我一人逃脫，來報信給你。」
17And while he also was yet speaking, there came another, and said: The Chaldeans made three troops, and have fallen upon the camels, and taken them, moreover they have slain the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell thee.
18他還說話的時候，又有人來說：「你的兒女正在他們長兄的家裏吃飯喝酒，
18He was yet speaking, and behold another came in, and said: Thy sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their elder brother:
19不料，有狂風從曠野颳來，擊打房屋的四角，房屋倒塌在少年人身上，他們就都死了；惟有我一人逃脫，來報信給你。」
19A violent wind came on a sudden from the side of the desert, and shook the four corners of the house, and it fell upon thy children and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to fell thee.
20約伯 便起來，撕裂外袍，剃了頭，伏在地上下拜，
20Then Job rose up, and rent his garments, and having shaven his head fell down upon the ground and worshipped,
21說：「我赤身出於母胎，也必赤身歸回；賞賜的是耶和華，收取的也是耶和華。耶和華的名是應當稱頌的。」
21And said: Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: as it hath pleased the Lord so is it done: blessed be the name of the Lord.
22在這一切的事上 約伯 並不犯罪，也不以上帝為愚妄。
22In all these things Job sinned not by his lips, nor spoke he any foolish thing against God.
