1Vejam quão grande amor o Pai nos concedeu, para que fôssemos chamados filhos de Deus! Por esta razão o mundo não nos conhece, porque não o conheceu.
1Behold what manner of charity the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called, and should be the sons of God. Therefore the world knoweth not us, because it knew not him.
2Amados, agora somos filhos de Deus. Ainda não se manifestou o que seremos; mas sabemos que, quando ele se manifestar, seremos semelhantes a ele, pois o veremos como ele é.
2Dearly beloved, we are now the sons of God; and it hath not yet appeared what we shall be. We know, that, when he shall appear, we shall be like to him: because we shall see him as he is.
3Todo aquele que tem essa esperança nele purifica-se, assim como ele é puro.
3And every one that hath this hope in him, sanctifieth himself, as he also is holy.
4Todo aquele que peca comete também iniquidade. O pecado é a iniquidade.
4Whosoever committeth sin committeth also iniquity; and sin is iniquity.
5Vocês sabem que ele se manifestou para tirar os nossos pecados, e nele não há pecado.
5And you know that he appeared to take away our sins, and in him there is no sin.
6Todo aquele que permanece nele não peca. Todo aquele que peca não o viu nem o conheceu.
6Whosoever abideth in him, sinneth not; and whosoever sinneth, hath not seen him, nor known him.
7Filhinhos, não deixem que ninguém os engane. Aquele que pratica a justiça é justo, assim como ele é justo.
7Little children, let no man deceive you. He that doth justice is just, even as he is just.
8Aquele que peca é do diabo, pois o diabo peca desde o princípio. Para isto o Filho de Deus se manifestou: para destruir as obras do diabo.
8He that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9Todo aquele que é nascido de Deus não comete pecado, porque a sua semente permanece nele; e não pode pecar, porque é nascido de Deus.
9Whosoever is born of God, committeth not sin: for his seed abideth in him, and he can not sin, because he is born of God.
10Nisto se manifestam os filhos de Deus e os filhos do diabo. Todo aquele que não pratica a justiça não é de Deus, nem aquele que não ama o seu irmão.
10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. Whosoever is not just, is not of God, nor he that loveth not his brother.
11Porque esta é a mensagem que ouviram desde o princípio: que nos amemos uns aos outros —
11For this is the declaration, which you have heard from the beginning, that you should love one another.
12não como Caim, que era do Maligno e assassinou o seu irmão. E por que o assassinou? Porque as suas obras eram más, e as de seu irmão eram justas.
12Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one, and killed his brother. And wherefore did he kill him? Because his own works were wicked: and his brother’s just.
13Não se surpreendam, meus irmãos, se o mundo os odeia.
13Wonder not, brethren, if the world hate you.
14Nós sabemos que já passamos da morte para a vida, porque amamos os irmãos. Aquele que não ama o seu irmão permanece na morte.
14We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not, abideth in death.
15Todo aquele que odeia o seu irmão é assassino, e vocês sabem que nenhum assassino tem a vida eterna permanecendo nele.
15Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer. And you know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in himself.
16Nisto conhecemos o amor: que ele deu a sua vida por nós. E nós também devemos dar as nossas vidas pelos irmãos.
16In this we have known the charity of God, because he hath laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17Mas, se alguém tem os bens deste mundo e vê o seu irmão passando necessidade, mas fecha o coração e não se compadece dele, como permanece nele o amor de Deus?
17He that hath the substance of this world, and shall see his brother in need, and shall shut up his bowels from him: how doth the charity of God abide in him?
18Meus filhinhos, não amemos apenas de palavra ou de língua, mas com ações e em verdade.
18My little children, let us not love in word, nor in tongue, but in deed, and in truth.
19E nisto sabemos que somos da verdade e tranquilizamos os nossos corações diante dele,
19In this we know that we are of the truth: and in his sight shall persuade our hearts.
20porque se o nosso coração nos condena, Deus é maior do que o nosso coração, e conhece todas as coisas.
20For if our heart reprehend us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21Amados, se os nossos corações não nos condenam, temos confiança diante de Deus;
21Dearly beloved, if our heart do not reprehend us, we have confidence towards God:
22e tudo o que pedirmos receberemos dele, porque guardamos os seus mandamentos e fazemos o que lhe agrada.
22And whatsoever we shall ask, we shall receive of him: because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.
23E este é o seu mandamento: que creiamos no nome de seu Filho, Jesus Cristo, e nos amemos uns aos outros, assim como ele nos ordenou.
23And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ: and love one another, as he hath given commandment unto us.
24Aquele que guarda os seus mandamentos permanece nele, e ele nele. Nisto sabemos que ele permanece em nós: pelo Espírito que nos deu.
24And he that keepeth his commandments, abideth in him, and he in him. And in this we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
