1Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel prophesied they unto them.
1那時，先知 哈該 和 易多 的孫子 撒迦利亞 奉 以色列 上帝的名向 猶大 和 耶路撒冷 的 猶大 人說勸勉的話。
2Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them.
2於是 撒拉鐵 的兒子 所羅巴伯 和 約薩達 的兒子 耶書亞 都起來動手建造 耶路撒冷 上帝的殿，有上帝的先知在那裏幫助他們。
3At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and their companions, and said thus unto them: 'Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this structure?'
3當時 河西 的總督 達乃 和 示他‧波斯乃 ，並他們的同黨來問說：「誰降旨讓你們建造這殿，修成這牆呢？」
4'Then spoke we unto them after this manner, wrote they: What are the names of the men that build this building?'
4我們便告訴他們建造這殿的人叫甚麼名字。
5But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, till the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it.
5上帝的眼目看顧 猶大 的長老，以致總督等沒有叫他們停工，直到這事奏告 大流士 ，得着他的回諭。
6The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shethar-bozenai, and his companions the Apharesachites, who were beyond the River, sent unto Darius the king;
6河西 的總督 達乃 和 示他‧波斯乃 ，並他們的同黨，就是住 河西 的 亞法薩迦 人，上本奏告 大流士 王。
7they sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus: 'Unto Darius the king, all peace.
7本上寫着說：「願 大流士 王諸事平安。
8Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth on with diligence and prospereth in their hands.
8王該知道，我們往 猶大 省去，到了至大上帝的殿，這殿是用大石建造的。樑木插入牆內，工作甚速，他們手下亨通。
9Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus: Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?
9我們就問那些長老說：『誰降旨讓你們建造這殿，修成這牆呢？』
10We asked them their names also, to announce to thee, that we might write the names of the men that were at the head of them.
10又問他們的名字，要記錄他們首領的名字，奏告於王。
11And thus they returned us answer, saying: We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and finished.
11他們回答說：『我們是天地之上帝的僕人，重建前多年所建造的殿，就是 以色列 的一位大君王建造修成的。
12But because that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven, He gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.
12只因我們列祖惹天上的上帝發怒，上帝把他們交在 迦勒底 人 巴比倫 王 尼布甲尼撒 的手中，他就拆毀這殿，又將百姓擄到 巴比倫 。
13But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God.
13然而 巴比倫 王 塞魯士 元年，他降旨允准建造上帝的這殿。
14And the gold and silver vessels also of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;
14上帝殿中的金、銀器皿，就是 尼布甲尼撒 從 耶路撒冷 的殿中掠去帶到 巴比倫 廟裏的， 塞魯士 王從 巴比倫 廟裏取出來，交給派為省長的，名叫 設巴薩 ，
15and he said unto him: Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in its place.
15對他說可以將這些器皿帶去，放在 耶路撒冷 的殿中，在原處建造上帝的殿。
16Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundations of the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not completed.
16於是這 設巴薩 來建立 耶路撒冷 上帝殿的根基。這殿從那時直到如今尚未造成。』
17Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let search be made in the king's treasure-house there, which is at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.'
17現在王若以為美，請察 巴比倫 王的府庫，看 塞魯士 王降旨允准在 耶路撒冷 建造上帝的殿沒有，王的心意如何？請降旨曉諭我們。」
