1I will not stir him up, like one that is cruel: for who can resist my countenance?
1(40-25) Canst thou draw out leviathan with a fish-hook? or press down his tongue with a cord?
2Who hath given me before that I should repay him? All things that are under heaven are mine.
2(40-26) Canst thou put a ring into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a hook?
3I will not spare him, nor his mighty words, and framed to make supplication.
3(40-27) Will he make many supplications unto thee? or will he speak soft words unto thee?
4Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can go into the midst of his mouth?
4(40-28) Will he make a covenant with thee, that thou shouldest take him for a servant for ever?
5Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.
5(40-29) Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? Or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
6His body is like molten shields, shut close up with scales pressing upon one another.
6(40-30) Will the bands of fishermen make a banquet of him? Will they part him among the merchants?
7One is joined to another, and not so much as any air can come between them:
7(40-31) Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish-spears?
8They stick one to another and they hold one another fast, and shall not be separated.
8(40-32) Lay thy hand upon him; think upon the battle, thou wilt do so no more.
9His sneezing is like the shining of fire, and his eyes like the eyelids of the morning.
9(41-1) Behold, the hope of him is in vain; shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
10Out of his mouth go forth lamps, like torches of lighted fire.
10(41-2) None is so fierce that dare stir him up; who then is able to stand before Me?
11Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, like that of a pot heated and boiling.
11(41-3) Who hath given Me anything beforehand, that I should repay him? Whatsoever is under the whole heaven is Mine.
12His breath kindleth coals, and a flame cometh forth out of his mouth.
12(41-4) Would I keep silence concerning his boastings, or his proud talk, or his fair array of words?
13In his neck strength shall dwell, and want goeth before his face.
13(41-5) Who can uncover the face of his garment? Who shall come within his double bridle?
14The members of his flesh cleave one to another: he shall send lightnings against him, and they shall not be carried to another place.
14(41-6) Who can open the doors of his face? Round about his teeth is terror.
15His heart shall be as hard as a stone, and as firm as a smith’s anvil.
15(41-7) His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.
16When he shall raise him up, the angels shall fear, and being affrighted shall purify themselves.
16(41-8) One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
17When a sword shall lay at him, it shall not be able to hold, nor a spear, nor a breastplate.
17(41-9) They are joined one to another; they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.
18For he shall esteem iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
18(41-10) His sneezings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19The archer shall not put him to flight, the stones of the sling are to him like stubble.
19(41-11) Out of his mouth go burning torches, and sparks of fire leap forth.
20As stubble will he esteem the hammer, and he will laugh him to scorn who shaketh the spear.
20(41-12) Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot and burning rushes.
21The beams of the sun shall be under him, and he shall strew gold under him like mire.
21(41-13) His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.
22He shall make the deep sea to boil like a pot, and shall make it as when ointments boil.
22(41-14) In his neck abideth strength, and dismay danceth before him.
23A path shall shine after him, he shall esteem the deep as growing old.
23(41-15) The flakes of his flesh are joined together; they are firm upon him; they cannot be moved.
24There is no power upon earth that can be compared with him who was made to fear no one.
24(41-16) His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, firm as the nether millstone.
25He beholdeth every high thing, he is king over all the children of pride.
25(41-17) When he raiseth himself up, the mighty are afraid; by reason of despair they are beside themselves.
