1Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said:
1Pea naʻe toki tali ʻe Sofaa mei Neama, ʻo ne pehē,
2Shall not he that speaketh much, hear also? or shall a man full of talk be justified?
2“ʻIkai ʻoku totonu ke tali ʻae ngaahi lea lahi ni? Pea ʻe fakatonuhiaʻi koe ʻae tangata faʻa lau?
3Shall men hold their peace to thee only? and when thou hast mocked others, shall no man confute thee?
3‌ʻE fakalongoʻi ʻae kakai ʻe hoʻo ngaahi loi? Pea ʻi hoʻo manuki, ʻe ʻikai fakamā koe ʻe ha taha?
4For thou hast said: My word is pure, and I am clean in thy sight.
4He kuo ke pehē, ‘Ko ʻeku akonaki ʻoku totonu pē, pea ʻoku ou maʻa ʻi ho ʻao.’
5And I wish that God would speak with thee, and would open his lips to thee,
5Kae taumaiā ke folofola mai ʻae ʻOtua, ʻo ne faʻai hono fofonga kiate koe;
6That he might shew thee the secrets of wisdom, and that his law is manifold, and thou mightest understand that he exacteth much less of thee, than thy iniquity deserveth.
6Pea ne fakahā kiate koe ʻae ngaahi meʻa lilo ʻoe poto, he ʻoku lahi hake ʻaupito ia ʻi he meʻa ʻoku hā mai! Ko ia ke ke ʻilo, ʻoku siʻi ʻae totongi ʻoku ʻeke ʻe he ʻOtua ʻi he meʻa ʻoku taau mo hoʻo angahia.
7Peradventure thou wilt comprehend the steps of God, and wilt find out the Almighty perfectly?
7“He te ke ʻilo ʻae ʻOtua ʻi he faʻa ʻeke? He te ke faʻa kumi ke ʻilo haohaoa ʻae Māfimafi?
8He is higher than heaven, and what wilt thou do? he is deeper than hell, and how wilt thou know?
8‌ʻOku māʻolunga ia ʻo hangē ko e langi; ko e hā ʻaʻau te ke fai? ʻOku māʻulalo hifo ʻi heli; te ke faʻa ʻilo ʻae hā?
9The measure of him is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
9Ko hono fuofua ʻoku lōloa lahi ʻi he māmani, pea lau lahi ia ʻi he tahi.
10If he shall overturn all things, or shall press them together, who shall contradict him?
10Kapau ʻe tuʻusi ʻe ia, pe tāpuni ke maʻu, pe tānaki fakataha, ʻe taʻofi ia ʻe hai?
11For he knoweth the vanity of men, and when he seeth iniquity, doth he not consider it?
11He ʻoku ne ʻiloʻi ʻae kakai vale: ʻoku ne vakai foki ki he fai kovi; pea ʻe ʻikai te ne tokangaʻi?
12A vain man is lifted up into pride, and thinketh himself born free like a wild ass’s colt.
12He ʻoku fie poto ʻae tangata vale, neongo ʻoku fanauʻi ʻae tangata ʻo hangē ko e ʻuhiki ʻoe ʻasi kai vao.
13Rut thou hast hardened thy heart, and hast spread thy hands to him.
13“Kapau te ke teu ho loto, pea mafao atu ho nima kiate ia;
14If thou wilt put away from thee the iniquity that is in thy hand, and lot not injustice remain in thy tabernacle:
14Kapau ʻoku ʻi ho nima ʻae angahala, siʻaki ia ke mamaʻo, pea ʻoua naʻa nofo ʻae kovi ʻi ho ngaahi fale.
15Then mayst thou lift up thy face without spot, and thou shalt be steadfast, and shalt not fear.
15He ko ia te ke toki hanga hake ai ho mata ʻo taʻehanoʻila; ʻio, te ke tuʻumaʻu, ʻo ʻikai manavahē:
16Thou shalt also forget misery, and remember it only as waters that are passed away.
16He te ke fakangaloʻi hoʻo mamahi, ʻo manatuʻi ia ʻo hangē ko e ngaahi vai kuo tafe atu:
17And brightness like that of the noonday, shall arise to thee at evening: and when thou shalt think thyself consumed, thou shalt rise as the day star.
17Pea ʻe ʻāsinisini lahi hoʻo motuʻa ʻi he hoʻatāmālie ʻoe ʻaho; te ke ulo atu, te ke tatau mo e pongipongi.
18And thou shalt have confidence, hope being set before thee, and being buried thou shalt sleep secure.
18Pea te ke fiemālie koe, he ʻoku ai ʻae ʻamanaki lelei; ʻio, te ke keli, ʻo mālōlō fiemālie pe.
19Thou shalt rest, and there shall be none to make thee afraid: and many shall entreat thy face.
19Pea te ke tokoto foki, pea ʻe ʻikai fakamanavahēʻi koe ʻe ha taha; ʻio, ʻe kumi meʻa meiate koe ʻe he tokolahi.
20But the eyes of the wicked shall decay, and the way to escape shall fail them, and their hope the abomination of the soul.
20Ka ʻe vaivai ʻae mata ʻoe angahala, pea ʻe ʻikai te nau hao, pea ko e ifi ʻoe mānava ʻa ʻenau ʻamanaki.”
