1While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with the daughters of Moab,
1І жив Ізраїль у Ситтимі, і став блудувати люд із дочками Моабовими;
2who also invited them to the sacrifices for their gods. And the people ate and bowed down to these gods.
2І стали вони кликати люд на жертви богам своїм.
3So Israel joined in worshiping Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD burned against them.
3І їв люд і припадав ниць перед богами їх, і прихиливсь Ізраїль до Бааль-Пеора. І запалав Господь гнївом на Ізраїля.
4Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that His fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”
4І рече Господь до Мойсея: возьми всї голови людські та й повісь їх Господеві проти соньця, щоб одвернувсь жар гнїва Господнього від Ізраїля.
5So Moses told the judges of Israel, “Each of you must kill all of his men who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.”
5І рече Мойсей суддям Ізрайлевим: Нехай кожен із вас повбиває людей своїх, що прихилились до Бааль-Пеора.
6Just then an Israelite man brought to his family a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and the whole congregation of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
6І се прийшов один ізміж синів Ізрайлевих, і привів до браттї своєї Мидіянїйку, перед очима Мойсея й перед очима всієї громади Ізрайлевої, як вони тодї плакали коло входу в соборний намет.
7On seeing this, Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,
7І побачив Пінегас, син Елеазара, сина Арона сьвященника, і встав ізміж громади, та взяв спіса в руку.
8followed the Israelite into his tent, and drove the spear through both of them—through the Israelite and on through the belly of the woman. So the plague against the Israelites was halted,
8І пійшов він слїдом за чоловіком Ізраїльським у середину шатра, та й пробив їх обох, чоловіка Ізраїльського й молодицю крізь животи їх.
9but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.
9І зупинено помір між синами Ізраїля, а було мерцїв від помору двайцять і чотири тисячі.
10Then the LORD said to Moses,
10І рече Господь до Мойсея:
11“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the Israelites; for he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in My zeal.
11Пінегас, син Елеазара, сина Арона сьвященника, одвернув ярость мою від синів Ізрайлевих, ревнуючи за мене проміж ними, щоб не я вигубив синів Ізрайлевих в ревностї моїй.
12Declare, therefore, that I am granting him My covenant of peace.
12Тим же то промов: Се я даю йому завіт мого примиря.
13It will be a covenant of permanent priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”
13І буде він йому й насїнню його після його завітом сьвященства віковічнього за те, що ревнував він за Бога свого, та й спокутував синів Ізрайлевих.
14The name of the Israelite who was slain with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.
14Імя ж чоловіка Ізраїльського погибшого, що проколено його з Мидіянїйкою, Зимрій Салусенко, князь батьківського дому Симеоніїв;
15And the name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.
15На імя ж проколена молодиця Козбія, дочка Зура, голови одного батьківського дому в Мидіянїїв.
16And the LORD said to Moses,
16І рече Господь Мойсейові:
17“Attack the Midianites and strike them dead.
17Ворогуйте з Мидіянїями та й побивайте їх: бо по ворожи поступили вони з вами підступом своїм, затуманюючи вас Пеором і Козбією, дочкою князя Мидіянського, що вбито її під час мору задля Пеора.
18For they assailed you deceitfully when they seduced you in the matter of Peor and their sister Cozbi, the daughter of the Midianite leader, the woman who was killed on the day the plague came because of Peor.”
