1While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with the daughters of Moab,
1ΚΑΙ κατέλυσεν Ἰσραὴλ ἐν Σαττείν· καὶ ἐβεβηλώθη ὁ λαὸς ἐκπορνεῦσαι εἰς τὰς θυγατέρας Μωάβ.
2who also invited them to the sacrifices for their gods. And the people ate and bowed down to these gods.
2καὶ ἐκάλεσαν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰς θυσίας τῶν εἰδώλων αὐτῶν, καὶ ἔφαγεν ὁ λαὸς τῶν θυσιῶν αὐτῶν καὶ προσεκύνησαν τοῖς εἰδώλοις αὐτῶν.
3So Israel joined in worshiping Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD burned against them.
3καὶ ἐτελέσθη Ἰσραὴλ τῷ Βεελφεγώρ· καὶ ὠργίσθη θυμῷ Κύριος τῷ Ἰσραήλ.
4Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that His fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”
4καὶ εἶπε Κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ· λαβὲ πάντας τοὺς ἀρχηγοὺς τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ παραδειγμάτισον αὐτοὺς Κυρίῳ κατέναντι τοῦ ἡλίου, καὶ ἀποστραφήσεται ὀργὴ θυμοῦ Κυρίου ἀπὸ Ἰσραήλ.
5So Moses told the judges of Israel, “Each of you must kill all of his men who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.”
5καὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς ταῖς φυλαῖς Ἰσραήλ· ἀποκτείνατε ἕκαστος τὸν οἰκεῖον αὐτοῦ τὸν τετελεσμένον τῷ Βεελφεγώρ.
6Just then an Israelite man brought to his family a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and the whole congregation of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
6Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐλθὼν προσήγαγε τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ πρὸς τὴν Μαδιανῖτιν ἐναντίον Μωυσῆ καὶ ἐναντίον πάσης συναγωγῆς υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ, αὐτοὶ δὲ ἔκλαιον παρὰ τὴν θύραν τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου.
7On seeing this, Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,
7καὶ ἰδὼν Φινεὲς υἱὸς Ἐλεάζαρ υἱοῦ Ἀαρὼν τοῦ ἱερέως ἐξανέστη ἐκ μέσου τῆς συναγωγῆς καὶ λαβὼν σειρομάστην ἐν τῇ χειρὶ
8followed the Israelite into his tent, and drove the spear through both of them—through the Israelite and on through the belly of the woman. So the plague against the Israelites was halted,
8εἰσῆλθεν ὀπίσω τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τοῦ Ἰσραηλίτου εἰς τὴν κάμινον καὶ ἀπεκέντησεν ἀμφοτέρους, τόν τε ἄνθρωπον τὸν Ἰσραηλίτην καὶ τὴν γυναῖκα διὰ τῆς μήτρας αὐτῆς· καὶ ἐπαύσατο ἡ πληγὴ ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ.
9but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.
9καὶ ἐγένοντο οἱ τεθνηκότες ἐν τῇ πληγῇ τέσσαρες καὶ εἴκοσι χιλιάδες.
10Then the LORD said to Moses,
10Καὶ ἐλάλησε Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων·
11“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the Israelites; for he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in My zeal.
11Φινεὲς υἱὸς Ἐλεάζαρ υἱοῦ Ἀαρὼν τοῦ ἱερέως κατέπαυσε τὸν θυμόν μου ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐν τῷ ζηλῶσαί μου τὸν ζῆλον ἐν αὐτοῖς, καὶ οὐκ ἐξανήλωσα τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ ἐν τῷ ζήλῳ μου.
12Declare, therefore, that I am granting him My covenant of peace.
12οὕτως εἶπον· ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ δίδωμι αὐτῷ διαθήκην εἰρήνης,
13It will be a covenant of permanent priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”
13καὶ ἔσται αὐτῷ καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ μετ' αὐτὸν διαθήκη ἱερατείας αἰωνία, ἀνθ' ὧν ἐζήλωσε τῷ Θεῷ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξιλάσατο περὶ τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ.
14The name of the Israelite who was slain with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family.
14τὸ δὲ ὄνομα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τοῦ Ἰσραηλίτου τοῦ πεπληγότος, ὃς ἐπλήγη μετὰ τῆς Μαδιανίτιδος, Ζαμβρὶ υἱὸς Σαλώ, ἄρχων οἴκου πατριᾶς τῶν Συμεών·
15And the name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.
15καὶ ὄνομα τῇ γυναικὶ τῇ Μαδιανίτιδι τῇ πεπληγυίᾳ Χασβί, θυγάτηρ Σοὺρ ἄρχοντος ἔθνους Ὀμμώθ, οἴκου πατριᾶς ἐστι τῶν Μαδιάμ.
16And the LORD said to Moses,
16Καὶ ἐλάλησε Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων· λάλησον τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ λέγων·
17“Attack the Midianites and strike them dead.
17ἐχθραίνετε τοῖς Μαδιηναίοις καὶ πατάξατε αὐτούς,
18For they assailed you deceitfully when they seduced you in the matter of Peor and their sister Cozbi, the daughter of the Midianite leader, the woman who was killed on the day the plague came because of Peor.”
18ὅτι ἐχθραίνουσιν αὐτοὶ ὑμῖν ἐν δολιότητι, ὅσα δολιοῦσιν ὑμᾶς διὰ Φογὼρ καὶ διὰ Χασβὶ θυγατέρα ἄρχοντος Μαδιὰμ ἀδελφὴν αὐτῶν τὴν πεπληγυῖαν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς πληγῆς διὰ Φογώρ.
