Job 4

Berean Standard Bible
Douay-Rheims Bible, American Edition (1899)
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
1Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:
2“If one ventures a word with you, will you be wearied? Yet who can keep from speaking?
2If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?
3Surely you have instructed many, and have strengthened their feeble hands.
3Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:
4Your words have steadied those who stumbled; you have braced the knees that were buckling.
4Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:
5But now trouble has come upon you, and you are weary. It strikes you, and you are dismayed.
5But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.
6Is your reverence not your confidence, and the uprightness of your ways your hope?
6Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?
7Consider now, I plead: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Or where have the upright been destroyed?
7Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?
8As I have observed, those who plow iniquity and those who sow trouble reap the same.
8On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,
9By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of His anger they are consumed.
9Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.
10The lion may roar, and the fierce lion may growl, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken.
10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:
11The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
11The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.
12Now a word came to me secretly; my ears caught a whisper of it.
12Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.
13In disquieting visions in the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
13In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,
14fear and trembling came over me and made all my bones shudder.
14Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:
15Then a spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body bristled.
15And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.
16It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance; a form loomed before my eyes, and I heard a whispering voice:
16There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:
17‘Can a mortal be more righteous than God, or a man more pure than his Maker?
17Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?
18If God puts no trust in His servants, and He charges His angels with error,
18Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:
19how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who can be crushed like a moth!
19How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?
20They are smashed to pieces from dawn to dusk; unnoticed, they perish forever.
20From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.
21Are not their tent cords pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?’
21And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.
