Job 42

Berean Standard Bible
Douay-Rheims Bible, American Edition (1899)
1Then Job replied to the LORD:
1Then Job answered the Lord, and said:
2“I know that You can do all things and that no plan of Yours can be thwarted.
2I know that thou canst do all things, and no thought is hid from thee.
3You asked, ‘Who is this who conceals My counsel without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.
3Who is this that hideth counsel without knowledge? Therefore I have spoken unwisely, and things that above measure exceeded my knowledge.
4You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak. I will question you, and you shall inform Me.’
4Hear, and I will speak: I will ask thee, and do thou tell me.
5My ears had heard of You, but now my eyes have seen You.
5With the hearing of the ear, I have heard thee, but now my eye seeth thee.
6Therefore I retract my words, and I repent in dust and ashes.”
6Therefore I reprehend myself, and do penance in dust and ashes.
7After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken about Me accurately, as My servant Job has.
7And after the Lord had spoken these words to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Themanite: My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends, because you have not spoken the thing that is right before my, as my servant Job hath.
8So now, take seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. Then My servant Job will pray for you, for I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken accurately about Me, as My servant Job has.”
8Take unto you therefore seven oxen, and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer for yourselves a holocaust: and my servant Job shall pray for you: his face I will accept, that folly be not imputed to you: for you have not spoken right things before me, as my servant Job hath.
9So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the LORD had told them; and the LORD accepted Job’s request.
9So Eliphaz the Themanite, and Baldad the Suhite, and Sophar the Naamathite went, and did as the Lord had spoken to them, and the Lord accepted the face of Job.
10After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his prosperity and doubled his former possessions.
10The Lord also was turned at the penance of Job, when he prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.
11All his brothers and sisters and prior acquaintances came and dined with him in his house. They consoled him and comforted him over all the adversity that the LORD had brought upon him. And each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.
11And all his brethren came to him, and all his sisters, and all that knew him before, and they ate bread with him in his house: and bemoaned him, and comforted him upon all the evil that God had brought upon him. And every man gave him one ewe, and one earring of fold.
12So the LORD blessed Job’s latter days more than his first. He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys.
12And the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning. And he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.
13And he also had seven sons and three daughters.
13And he had seven sons, and three daughters.
14He named his first daughter Jemimah, his second Keziah, and his third Keren-happuch.
14And he called the names of one Dies, and the name of the second Cassia, and the name of the third Cornustibil.
15No women as beautiful as Job’s daughters could be found in all the land, and their father granted them an inheritance among their brothers.
15And there were not found in all the earth women so beautiful as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.
16After this, Job lived 140 years and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.
16And Job lived after these things, a hundred and forty years, and he saw his children, and his children’s children, unto the fourth generation, and he died an old man, and full of days.
17And so Job died, old and full of years.
