1Pea naʻe toki tali ʻe Siope, ʻo ne pehē,
1And Job answered, and said:
2‌ʻOku ou ʻilo ʻoku pehē moʻoni ia ka ʻe tonuhia fēfē ʻae tangata ʻi he ʻao ʻoe ʻOtua?
2Indeed I know it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with God.
3Kapau te na alea, mo ia, ʻe ʻikai te ne faʻa talia ʻe ia ha taha ʻi he meʻa ʻe afe.
3If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one for a thousand.
4‌ʻOku poto ia ʻi loto, pea lahi ʻi he mālohi: ko hai kuo ne fakaangatuʻu ia kiate ia, pea monūʻia?
4He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath resisted him, and hath had peace?
5Ko ia ia ʻoku ne hiki ʻae ngaahi moʻunga, kae ʻikai ke nau ʻilo: ʻoku ne fulihi ia ʻi hono houhau.
5Who hath removed mountains, and they whom he overthrew in his wrath, knew it not.
6‌ʻOku ne luluʻi ʻae fonua mei hono potu, pea ʻoku ngalulululu hono ngaahi pou.
6Who shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.
7Who commandeth tile sun and it riseth not: and shutteth up the stars as it were under a seal:
8‌ʻOku ne folahi atu tokotaha pē ʻae ngaahi langi, pea ʻoku ne hāʻele ʻi he ngaahi peau ʻoe tahi.
8Who alone spreadeth out the heavens, and walketh upon the waves of the sea.
9Who maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the inner parts of the south.
10‌ʻOku ne fai ʻae ngaahi meʻa lahi ʻo taʻefaʻaʻilo; ʻio, ko e ngaahi meʻa mana ʻoku taʻefaʻalaua.
10Who doth things great and incomprehensible, and wonderful, of which there is no number.
11Vakai, ʻoku hāʻele ia ʻi hoku tafaʻaki, ka ʻoku ʻikai te u mamata ki ai: ʻoku ne hāʻele atu foki ka ʻoku ʻikai te u ʻiloʻi ia.
11If he come to me, I shall not see him: if he depart I shall not understand.
12Vakai, ʻoku ne toʻo atu, ko hai ʻe faʻa taʻofi ia? Ko hai ʻe pehē kiate ia, ‘Ko e hā ʻoku ke fai?’
12If he examine on a sudden, who shall answer him? or who can say: Why dost thou so?
13“Kapau ʻe ʻikai taʻofi ʻe he ʻOtua ki hono houhau, ʻe mapelu ki lalo ʻiate ia ʻae kau tokoni fielahi.
13God, whose wrath no mall can resist, and under whom they stoop that bear up the world.
14Kae fēfē ai ʻeku talia ia ʻeau, pea u fili ʻeku ngaahi lea ke alea mo ia?
14What am I then, that I should answer him, and have words with him?
15‌ʻAia ʻe ʻikai te u talia, ʻoka ne u māʻoniʻoni, ka te u hū tāumaʻu ki hoku Fakamaau.
15I, who although I should have any just thing, would not answer, but would make supplication to my judge.
16Ka ne u ui, pea talia ia; kae ʻikai te u tui kuo ne ongoʻi hoku leʻo.
16And if he should hear me when I call, I should not believe that he had heard my voice.
17For he shall crush me in a whirlwind, and multiply my wounds even without cause.
18‌ʻOku ʻikai tuku ʻe ia ke u mānava, ka ʻoku ne fakapito au ʻaki ʻae mamahi.
18He alloweth not my spirit to rest, and he filleth me with bitterness.
19Kapau te u lea ki he mālohi, vakai, ʻoku māfimafi ia: pe ki he fakamaau, ‘ko hai te ne fakamoʻoni kiate au?’
19If strength be demanded, he is most strong: if equity of judgment, no man dare bear witness for me.
20If I would justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I would shew myself innocent, he shall prove me wicked.
21Neongo ʻa ʻeku haohaoa, ka ʻe ʻikai te u ʻilo ki hoku loto: te u fehiʻa ʻeau pē ki heʻeku moʻui.
21Although I should be simple, even this my soul shall be ignorant of, and I shall be weary of my life.
22“Ko e meʻa ni pē taha, ʻoku ou fakamoʻoni ki ai, ʻOku ne fakaʻauha ʻae haohaoa mo e angahala.
22One thing there is that I have spoken, both the innocent and the wicked he consumeth.
23Kapau ʻe fakafokifā pē ʻae taaʻi ʻe he fakamamahi, ʻe kata ʻe ia ʻi he ʻahiʻahiʻi ʻoe taʻeangahala.
23If he scourge, let him kill at once, and not laugh at the pains of the innocent.
24Kuo tuku ʻae fonua ki he nima ʻoe angahala: ʻoku ne ʻufiʻufi ʻae mata ʻo hono kau fakamāu; ka ʻikai, pea kofaa, pe ko hai ia?
24The earth is given into the hand of the wicked, he covereth the face of the judges thereof: and if it be not he, who is it then?
25“ʻOku vave eni ʻa hoku ngaahi ʻaho ʻi he tangata fekau: ʻoku puna atu ia, ʻoku ʻikai ʻilo ʻe ia ha lelei.
25My days have been swifter than a post: they have fled away and have not seen good.
26Kuo mole ia ʻo hangē ko e ngaahi vaka ngaholo: ʻo hangē ko e ʻikale ʻoku fakavave ki he kai.
26They have passed by as ships carrying fruits, as an eagle flying to the prey.
27Kapau te u pehē, ‘Te u fakangaloʻi ʻa ʻeku mamahi, te u siʻaki ʻeku māfasia, ʻo fakafiemālieʻi au:’
27If I say: I will not speak so: I change my face, and am tormented with sorrow.
28Tā te u ilifia ʻi heʻeku ngaahi mamahi fulipē, ʻoku ou ʻilo ʻe ʻikai te ke fakatonuhiaʻi au.
28I feared all my works, knowing that thou didst not spare the offender.
29Kapau ʻoku ou angakovi, pea tā ʻoku kei taʻeʻaonga pe ʻeku ngāue?
29But if so also I am wicked, why have I laboured in vain?
30He kapau te u kaukau au ʻi he vai ʻuha hinehina, ʻo ngaohi ke maʻa ʻaupito hoku nima;
30If I be washed as it were with snow waters, and my hands shall shine ever so clean:
31Ka te ke lī au ki he pelepela, pea ʻe fakaliliʻa kiate au ʻa hoku ngaahi kofu ʻoʻoku.
31Yet thou shalt plunge me in filth, and my garments shall abhor me,
32He ʻoku ʻikai ko e tangata ia, ʻo hangē ko au, koeʻuhi ke u talia ia, pea kema fakataha ʻi he fakamaau.
32For I shall not answer a man that is like myself: nor one that may be heard with me equally in judgment.
33Pea ʻoku ʻikai ha tangata fakalelei ʻi homa vahaʻa, ke ne hili hono nima kiate kimaua fakatouʻosi.
33There is none that may be able to reprove both, and to put his hand between both.
34Ke toʻo ʻe ia ʻene meʻa tā ʻiate au, pea ʻoua naʻa fakailifiaʻi au ʻe heʻene manavahē:
34Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me.
35Te u toki lea ai, ʻo taʻemanavahē kiate ia; ka ʻoku ʻikai te u pehē eni.
35I will speak, and will not fear him: for I cannot answer while I am in fear.
