1Overigens broeders, bidden en smeken we u in den Heer Jesus, dat gij nog meer moogt uitmunten in uw levenswandel en in het behagen aan God, zoals gij dat van ons hebt geleerd, en zoals gij dat feitelijk reeds betracht.
1Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
2Gij weet toch wel, welke voorschriften we u uit naam van den Heer Jesus hebben gegeven.
2For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.
3Want dit is Gods wil, uw heiliging: dat gij u namelijk van ontucht onthoudt;
3For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
4dat ieder van u zijn eigen vrouw weet te verwerven in heiligheid en eerbaarheid,
4That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
5niet in hartstochtelijke begeerlijkheid, zoals de heidenen, die God niet kennen;
5Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
6dat niemand zich te buiten gaat, en in deze aangelegenheid zijn broeder bedriegt. Want de Heer is de Wreker van al deze dingen, zoals we het vroeger hebben gezegd en voortdurend betuigd.
6That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
7Want God heeft ons niet tot onreinheid geroepen, maar tot heiligheid.
7For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
8Wie dit dus veracht, veracht niet een mens, maar God zelf, die ook aan u zijn heiligen Geest heeft geschonken.
8He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
9Over de broederliefde is het niet nodig, u te schrijven. Want zelf hebt gij van God geleerd, elkander lief te hebben; en gij doet het ook tegenover alle broeders in heel Macedonië.
9But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
10Maar we vermanen u, broeders, om nog meer uit te munten,
10And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;
11en er zelfs een eer in te stellen, om rustig te leven, u met uw eigen zaken te bemoeien, en zelf de handen aan het werk te slaan, zoals we u dat geboden hebben.
11And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
12Zo toch gedraagt gij u behoorlijk voor hen, die buiten staan, en hebt gij van niemand iets nodig.
12That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.
13Broeders, wij willen u niet in onwetendheid laten over hen die ontslapen zijn, opdat gij niet treurt als de anderen, die geen hoop meer bezitten.
13But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14Want zo wij geloven, dat Jesus gestorven is en verrezen, dan geloven wij ook, dat God hen, die in Jesus ontsliepen, zal terugvoeren met Hem.
14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15Want dit zeggen wij u op ‘s Heren woord: Wij die leven en achter blijven tot ‘s Heren komst, wij zullen de ontslapenen zeer zeker niet vóór gaan.
15For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16Want op een teken, op het geroep van den Aartsengel en de bazuinstoot van God, zal de Heer zelf uit de hemel nederdalen, en allereerst zullen zij verrijzen, die stierven in Christus;
16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17eerst dan zullen wij, die leven en achterblijven, tezamen met hen worden weggevoerd op de wolken, den Heer tegemoet in de lucht. En zó zullen wij altijd bij den Heer blijven.
17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18Vertroost dus elkander met deze woorden.
18Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
