1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
1ای حبیبان، هر روح را قبول مکنید بلکه روح‌ها را بیازمایید که از خدا هستند یا نه. زیرا که انبیای کذبه بسیار به جهان بیرون رفته‌اند.
2Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
2به این، روح خدا را می‌شناسیم: هر روحی که به عیسی مسیح مجسم شده اقرار نماید از خداست،
3And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
3و هر روحی که عیسی مسیح مجسم شده راانکار کند، از خدا نیست. و این است روح دجال که شنیده‌اید که او می‌آید و الان هم در جهان است.
4Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
4ای فرزندان، شما از خدا هستید و بر ایشان غلبه یافته‌اید زیرا او که در شماست، بزرگتر است از آنکه در جهان است.
5They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
5ایشان از دنیا هستند ازاین جهت سخنان دنیوی می‌گویند و دنیا ایشان رامی شنود.
6We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
6ما از خدا هستیم و هرکه خدا رامی شناسد ما را می‌شنود و آنکه از خدا نیست مارا نمی شنود. روح حق و روح ضلالت را از این تمییز می‌دهیم.
7Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
7ای حبیبان، یکدیگر را محبت بنماییم زیراکه محبت از خداست و هرکه محبت می‌نماید ازخدا مولود شده است و خدا را می‌شناسد،
8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
8وکسی‌که محبت نمی نماید، خدا را نمی شناسدزیرا خدا محبت است.
9In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
9و محبت خدا به ما ظاهرشده است به اینکه خدا پسر یگانه خود را به جهان فرستاده است تا به وی زیست نماییم.
10Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
10ومحبت در همین است، نه آنکه ما خدا را محبت نمودیم، بلکه اینکه او ما را محبت نمود و پسرخود را فرستاد تاکفاره گناهان ما شود.
11Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
11ای حبیبان، اگر خدا با ما چنین محبت نمود، ما نیزمی باید یکدیگر را محبت نماییم.
12No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
12کسی هرگزخدا را ندید؛ اگر یکدیگر را محبت نماییم، خدادر ما ساکن است و محبت او در ما کامل شده است.
13Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
13از این می‌دانیم که در وی ساکنیم و او در مازیرا که از روح خود به ما داده است.
14And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
14و مادیده‌ایم و شهادت می‌دهیم که پدر پسر را فرستادتا نجات‌دهنده جهان بشود.
15Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
15هرکه اقرار می‌کندکه عیسی پسر خداست، خدا در وی ساکن است واو در خدا.
16And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
16و ما دانسته و باور کرده‌ایم آن محبتی را که خدا با ما نموده است. خدا محبت است و هرکه در محبت ساکن است در خدا ساکن است و خدا در وی.
17Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
17محبت در همین با ما کامل شده است تا درروز جزا ما را دلاوری باشد، زیرا چنانکه اوهست، ما نیز در این جهان همچنین هستیم.
18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
18درمحبت خوف نیست بلکه محبت کامل خوف رابیرون می‌اندازد؛ زیرا خوف عذاب دارد و کسی‌که خوف دارد، در محبت کامل نشده است.
19We love him, because he first loved us.
19مااو را محبت می‌نماییم زیرا که او اول ما را محبت نمود.
20If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
20اگر کسی گوید که خدا را محبت می‌نمایم و از برادر خود نفرت کند، دروغگوست، زیرا کسی‌که برادری را که دیده است محبت ننماید، چگونه ممکن است خدایی را که ندیده است محبت نماید؟
21And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
21و این حکم رااز وی یافته‌ایم که هرکه خدا را محبت می‌نماید، برادر خود را نیز محبت بنماید.
