1そのため、もはや耐えられなくなった私たちは、自分たちだけでアテネに残ることにしました。
1So when we could bear it no longer, we were willing to be left on our own in Athens.
2そして、私たちの兄弟であり、キリストの福音のために神に仕える者であるテモテを遣わしました。あなたがたの信仰を強め、励ますためです。
2We sent Timothy, our brother and fellow worker for God in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,
3それは、だれもこれらの苦難によって動揺することがないためです。私たちがこのために定められていることは、あなたがた自身が知っています。
3so that none of you would be shaken by these trials. For you know that we are destined for this.
4実際、あなたがたと一緒にいたとき、私たちは苦難に遭うことになると前もって話していました。そして、そのとおりになったことを、あなたがたは知っています。
4Indeed, when we were with you, we kept warning you that we would suffer persecution; and as you know, it has come to pass.
5そのため私も、もはや耐えられなくなり、あなたがたの信仰の様子を知ろうとしてテモテを遣わしました。誘惑する者があなたがたを誘惑し、私たちの労苦が無駄になってはいないかと心配したからです。
5For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith, for fear that the tempter had somehow tempted you and caused our labor to be in vain.
6ところが今、テモテがあなたがたのもとから私たちのところへ帰って来て、あなたがたの信仰と愛について良い知らせを伝えてくれました。また、あなたがたがいつも私たちを温かく心に留め、私たちがあなたがたに会いたいと願っているのと同じように、私たちに会いたいと切望していることも知らせてくれました。
6But just now, Timothy has returned from his visit with the good news about your faith, your love, and the fond memories you have preserved, longing to see us just as we long to see you.
7ですから兄弟姉妹、私たちはあらゆる苦悩と苦難の中にあっても、あなたがたの信仰によって慰められました。
7For this reason, brothers, in all our distress and persecution, we have been reassured about you, because of your faith.
8あなたがたが主にあって堅く立っているなら、私たちは今こそ生きる思いです。
8For now we can go on living, as long as you are standing firm in the Lord.
9私たちは、あなたがたのことで、神に感謝してもしきれません。あなたがたのゆえに、私たちの神の御前で、この上なく喜んでいるからです。
9How can we adequately thank God for you in return for our great joy over you in His presence?
10私たちは、あなたがたの顔を見て、あなたがたの信仰に欠けているところを補うことができるようにと、夜も昼も切に祈っています。
10Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking from your faith.
11どうか、私たちの神であり父である方ご自身と、私たちの主イエス・キリストが、あなたがたのもとへ行く道を開いてくださいますように。
11Now may our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you.
12また、私たちがあなたがたを愛しているように、主が、互いに対する愛とすべての人に対する愛を、あなたがたのうちに増し加え、あふれさせてくださいますように。
12And may the Lord cause you to increase and overflow with love for one another and for everyone else, just as our love for you overflows,
13そして、私たちの主イエスがすべての聖なる者たちとともに来られるとき、私たちの神であり父である方の御前で、あなたがたの心を強め、聖さのうちに非難されるところのないものとしてくださいますように。
13so that He may establish your hearts in blamelessness and holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints. Amen.
