Proverbs 13
JPS Tanakh (Jewish Publication Society, 1917)
Tongan Bible, Revised West Version
1A wise son is instructed of his father; but a scorner heareth not rebuke.
1ʻOku ongoʻi ʻe he foha ʻoku poto ʻae akonaki ʻa ʻene tamai: ka ʻoku ʻikai ke maʻu ʻae valoki ʻe he faʻa manuki.
2A man shall eat good from the fruit of his mouth; but the desire of the faithless is violence.
2ʻE kai ʻe he tangata ʻae lelei ʻi he fua ʻo hono ngutu: ka ʻe hoko ʻae fakamālohi ki he laumālie ʻoe kakai fai kovi.
3He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life; but for him that openeth wide his lips there shall be ruin.
3Ko ia ʻoku vakai ki hono ngutu, ʻoku tauhi ʻe ia ʻene moʻui: ka ʻe hoko ʻae fakaʻauha kiate ia ʻoku fakamanga lahi hono loungutu.
4The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be abundantly gratified.
4ʻOku holi ʻae laumālie ʻoe fakapikopiko, ka ʻoku ʻikai te ne maʻu ha meʻa: ka ʻe fafangaʻi ʻae laumālie ʻoe faʻa ngāue.
5A righteous man hateth lying; but a wicked man behaveth vilely and shamefully.
5ʻOku fehiʻa ki he loi ʻae tangata māʻoniʻoni: ka ko e tangata angahala ko e fakalielia ia, pea ʻoku hoko ia ʻo mā.
6Righteousness guardeth him that is upright in the way; but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
6ʻOku fokotuʻumaʻu ʻi hono hala ʻe he māʻoniʻoni ʻaia ʻoku angatonu; ka ʻoku tulaki hifo ʻe he kovi ʻaia ʻoku angahala.
7There is that pretendeth himself rich, yet hath nothing; there is that pretendeth himself poor, yet hath great wealth.
7ʻOku ai ʻaia ʻoku ne fakamaʻumeʻaʻi ia, ka ʻoku ne masiva pe: pea ʻoku ai ʻaia ʻoku ne fakamasivaʻi ia, ka ʻoku maʻu ʻe ia ʻae koloa lahi.
8The ransom of a man's life are his riches; but the poor heareth no threatening.
8Ko e koloa ʻae tangata ko e huhuʻi ia ʻo ʻene moʻui: ka ʻoku ʻikai fanongo ki he valoki ʻae masiva.
9The light of the righteous rejoiceth; but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
9ʻOku fiefia ʻae maama ʻoe māʻoniʻoni ka ʻe tāmateʻi ʻae maama ʻoe angahala.
10By pride cometh only contention; but with the well-advised is wisdom.
10ʻOku tupu pe ʻi he fielahi ʻae fekeʻikeʻi: ka ʻoku maʻu ʻae poto ʻekinautolu kuo akonakiʻi lelei.
11Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished; but he that gathereth little by little shall increase.
11Ko e koloa ʻoku maʻu ʻi he vikiviki ʻe fakaʻaʻau ia ke ʻosi: ka ʻe fakalahi ia kiate ia ʻoku tānaki ʻi he faʻa ngāue.
12Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; but desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
12ʻOku pongia ʻae loto ʻi he ʻamanaki ʻoku tuai ʻene hoko: pea ka hoko mai ʻaia ʻoku holi ki ai, ʻoku hangē ia ko e ʻakau ʻoe moʻui.
13Whoso despiseth the word shall suffer thereby; but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.
13ʻE fakaʻauha ia ʻaia ʻoku fehiʻa ki he folofola: ka ʻe fiemālie pe ia ʻaia ʻoku manavahē ki he fekau.
14The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
14Ko e fono ʻae poto ko e matavai ia ʻoe moʻui, ke tau hao ai mei he ngaahi tauhele ʻoe mate.
15Good understanding giveth grace; but the way of the faithless is harsh.
15ʻOku tupu mei he fakakaukau lelei ʻae ʻofa: ka ʻoku faingataʻa ʻae hala ʻoe kakai angahala.
16Every prudent man dealeth with forethought; but a fool unfoldeth folly.
16ʻOku faʻa kau ki he ʻilo ʻae tangata fakapotopoto: ka ʻoku fakahā pe ʻe he vale ʻa ʻene vale.
17A wicked messenger falleth into evil; but a faithful ambassador is health.
17ʻOku tō ki he kovi ʻae talafekau angakovi: ka ko e fakamoʻui ʻae talafekau ʻoku angatonu.
18Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction; but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.
18ʻE hoko ʻae masiva mo e mā kiate ia ʻoku ne tekeʻi ʻae akonaki: ka ʻe hakeakiʻi ia ʻaia ʻoku tokanga ki he valoki.
19The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul; and it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.
19ʻOku huʻamelie ki he laumālie ʻae hoko mai ʻoe meʻa ʻoku tau holi ki ai: ka ko e meʻa fakalielia ki he vale ʻae tafoki mei he kovi.
20He that walketh with wise men shall be wise; but the companion of fools shall smart for it.
20Ko ia ʻoku ʻaʻeva fakataha mo e kakai poto ʻe poto ai ia: ka ʻe fakaʻauha ia ʻoku kaumeʻa mo e kakai vale.
21Evil pursueth sinners; but to the righteous good shall be repaid.
21ʻOku tulia ʻae kau angahala ʻe he kovi: ka ʻe toe totongi ʻaki ʻae lelei kiate kinautolu ʻoku māʻoniʻoni.
22A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children; and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the righteous.
22ʻOku tuku ʻae tofiʻa ʻe he tangata angalelei ki he fānau ʻa ʻene fānau: ka ko e koloa ʻae angahala kuo tānaki maʻa e kakai angatonu.
23Much food is in the tillage of the poor; but there is that is swept away by want of righteousness.
23ʻOku ai ʻae meʻakai lahi ʻi he faʻa keli ʻae masiva: ka ʻoku ai ʻoku maumauʻi ko e meʻa ʻi he masiva poto.
24He that spareth his rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
24Ko ia ʻoku ne taʻofi ʻene meʻa kinikinisi ʻoku ne fehiʻa ki hono foha: ka ko ia ʻoku ʻofa ki ai ʻoku ne tautea ia ʻoka ʻaonga ke fai.
25The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his desire; but the belly of the wicked shall want.
25ʻOku kai ʻe he māʻoniʻoni ke fakamākona hono laumālie: ka ʻe fiekaia ʻae kete ʻoe angahala.
