1愛する者たち、すべての霊を信じてはいけません。その霊が神から出たものかどうかを吟味しなさい。多くの偽預言者が世に出て来ているからです。
1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2神の霊は、こうして見分けられます。イエス・キリストが肉体をもって来られたと告白する霊は皆、神から出ています。
2Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3イエス・キリストが肉体をもって来られたと告白しない霊は皆、神から出たものではありません。それは反キリストの霊です。あなたがたは、それが来ると聞いていましたが、今すでに世に来ています。
3And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4子どもたちよ、あなたがたは神から出た者であり、彼らに打ち勝っています。あなたがたのうちにおられる方は、世にいる者よりも偉大だからです。
4Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5彼らは世から出た者です。そのため、世のことを語り、世も彼らの言うことを聞きます。
5They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6私たちは神から出た者です。神を知る人は私たちの言うことを聞きます。神から出ていない人は聞きません。このことによって、真理の霊と迷いの霊を見分けることができます。
6We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7愛する者たち、互いに愛し合いましょう。愛は神から出ているからです。愛する人は皆、神から生まれ、神を知っています。
7Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8愛さない人は神を知りません。神は愛だからです。
8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9神は、ただひとりの御子 を世に遣わしてくださいました。その方によって私たちが生きるためです。このことによって、神の愛が私たちのうちに現されました。
9In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
10愛とは、私たちが神を愛したことではなく、神が私たちを愛し、私たちの罪を贖ういけにえ として御子を遣わしてくださったことです。
10Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
11愛する者たち、神がこのように私たちを愛してくださったのなら、私たちも互いに愛し合うべきです。
11Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
12いまだかつて、神を見た人はいません。私たちが互いに愛し合うなら、神は私たちのうちにとどまり、その愛が私たちのうちで全うされます。
12No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13神がご自分の聖霊を私たちに分け与えてくださったことによって、私たちが神のうちにとどまり、神も私たちのうちにとどまっておられることが分かります。
13Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14私たちは、父が御子を世の救い主として遣わされたのを見て、あかししています。
14And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
15イエスが神の御子であると告白する人はだれでも、神がその人のうちにとどまり、その人も神のうちにとどまります。
15Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16私たちは、神が私たちに抱いておられる愛を知り、信じています。神は愛です。愛のうちにとどまる人は神のうちにとどまり、神もその人のうちにとどまります。
16And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17このように、愛は私たちの間で全うされ、裁きの日にも私たちは確信を持てます。この方がそうであるように、私たちもこの世にあって、この方のような者だからです。
17Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18愛には恐れがありません。全うされた愛は恐れを締め出します。恐れは罰を伴うからです。恐れる人は、愛において全うされていません。
18There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19神がまず私たちを愛してくださったので、私たちは神を愛します。
19We love him, because he first loved us.
20「私は神を愛している」と言いながら自分の兄弟を憎む人がいるなら、その人は偽り者です。目に見える兄弟を愛さない人が、目に見えない神を愛することはできないからです。
20If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21神を愛する人は自分の兄弟をも愛するべきです。これが、私たちが神から受けている戒めです。
21And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
