1Come near, ye Gentiles, and hear, and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein, the world, and every thing that cometh forth of it.
1Treedt nader volken, om te horen, Naties, geeft acht; Laat de aarde luisteren met wat ze bevat, De wereld met wat er op tiert.
2For the indignation of the Lord if upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath killed them, and delivered them to slaughter.
2Want Jahweh is op alle volken vergramd, Op heel hun heir verbolgen; Hij heeft ze ten dode gedoemd, En ter slachting gewijd.
3Their slain shall be cast forth, and out of their carcasses shall rise a slink: the mountains shall be melted with their blood.
3Hun doden worden weggesmeten, Hun lijken liggen te rotten; De bergen vloeien weg in hun bloed,
4And all the host of the heavens shall pine away, and the heavens shall be folded together as a book: and all their host shall fall down as the leaf falleth from the vine, and from the fig tree.
4Alle heuvels smelten er van. De hemel wordt opgerold als een boekrol, Heel zijn heir stort omlaag, Zoals het blad van de wijnstok valt, Het verdorde loof van de vijg.
5For my sword is inebriated in heaven: behold it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my slaughter unto judgment.
5Want Jahweh’s zwaard Is in de hemel gewet; Zie, het suist op Edom neer, Op het volk ten oordeel gewijd.
6The sword of the Lord is filled with blood, it is made thick with the blood of lambs and buck goats, with the blood of rams full of marrow: for there is a victim of the Lord in Bosra and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
6Jahweh’s zwaard zit vol bloed, En het druipt van vet: Bloed van lammeren en bokken, Vet uit de nieren der rammen. Want Jahweh houdt een offer in Bosra, Een geweldige slachting in het land van Edom:
7And the unicorns shall go down with them, and the bulls with the mighty: their land shall be soaked with blood, and their ground with the fat of fat ones.
7Buffels storten met varren neer, En ossen met stieren. Hun land is dronken van bloed, Hun bodem druipt van vet:
8For it is the day of the vengeance of the Lord, the year of recompenses of the judgment of Sion.
8Want het is voor Jahweh een dag van wraak, Een jaar van straf voor den hater van Sion.
9And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the ground thereof into brimstone: and the land thereof shall become burning pitch.
9Zijn beken worden veranderd in teer, Zijn bodem in zwavel, zijn land in pek, Dat dag en nacht brandt,
10Night and day it shall not be quenched, the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste, none shall pass through it for ever and ever.
10En nooit wordt geblust. Zijn rook stijgt eeuwig omhoog, Van geslacht tot geslacht; Het ligt verwoest voor altijd en immer, Niemand trekt er doorheen.
11The bittern and ericius shall possess it: and the ibis and the raven shall dwell in it: and a line shall be stretched out upon it, to bring it to nothing, and a plummet, unto desolation.
11Kraai en reiger nemen het in hun bezit, Uil en raaf gaan er wonen: Het meetsnoer der woestheid is er overheen getrokken, En het paslood der leegheid.
12The nobles thereof shall not be there: they shall call rather upon the king, and all the princes thereof shall be nothing.
12Seïr is zonder bewoners geworden, Zijn adel is er niet meer; Niemand, die men tot koning kan kiezen, Al zijn vorsten zijn heen.
13And thorns and nettles shall grow up in its houses, and the thistle in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be the habitation of dragons, and the pasture of ostriches.
13Doornen woekeren in zijn paleizen, In zijn burchten netels en distels; Het is een hol voor de jakhals, En een park voor de struisen.
14And demons and monsters shall meet, and the hairy ones shall cry out one to another, there hath the lamia lain down, and found rest for herself.
14Wilde katten ontmoeten er honden, Baarlijke duivels treffen elkaar; De schimmen spoken er rond, En vinden hun rust.
15There hath the ericius had its hole, and brought up its young ones, and hath dug round about, and cherished them in the shadow thereof: thither are the kites gathered together one to another.
15Daar nestelt de slang, en legt er haar eieren, Bedekt ze en broedt ze; Daar komen ook de gieren bijeen, En zoeken elkaar.
16Search ye diligently in the book of the Lord, and read: not one of them was wanting, one hath not sought for the other: for that which proceedeth out of my mouth, he hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.
16Jahweh roept ze in volle getale, Er ontbreekt er geen een, er wordt niemand gemist; Want zijn mond heeft ze ontboden, En zijn geest brengt ze bijeen.
17And he hath cast the lot for them, and his hand hath divided it to them by line: they shall possess it for ever, from generation to generation they shall dwell therein.
17Hij heeft voor hen het lot geworpen, Zijn hand met het snoer hun deel gemeten; Ze zullen het eeuwig bezitten, Van geslacht tot geslacht erin wonen.
