1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
1Hapo Mwanzo, Neno alikuwako; naye alikuwa na Mungu, naye alikuwa Mungu.
2He was with God in the beginning.
2Tangu mwanzo Neno alikuwa na Mungu.
3Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.
3Kwa njia yake vitu vyote viliumbwa; hakuna hata kiumbe kimoja kilichoumbwa pasipo yeye.
4In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.
4Yeye alikuwa chanzo cha uhai na uhai huo ulikuwa mwanga wa watu.
5The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
5Na mwanga huo huangaza gizani, nalo giza halikuweza kuushinda.
6There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John.
6Mungu alimtuma mtu mmoja jina lake Yohane,
7He came as a witness to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe.
7ambaye alikuja kuwaambia watu juu ya huo mwanga. Alikuja ili kwa ujumbe wake watu wote wapate kuamini.
8He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
8Yeye hakuwa huo mwanga, ila alikuja tu kuwaambia watu juu ya huo mwanga.
9The true Light who gives light to every man was coming into the world.
9Huu ndio mwanga halisi, mwanga unaokuja ulimwenguni, na kuwaangazia watu wote.
10He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him.
10Basi, Neno alikuwako ulimwenguni; na kwa njia yake ulimwengu uliumbwa, lakini ulimwengu haukumtambua.
11He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
11Alikuja katika nchi yake mwenyewe, nao walio wake hawakumpokea.
12But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—
12Lakini wale wote waliompokea na kumwamini, hao aliwapa uwezo wa kuwa watoto wa Mungu.
13children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God.
13Hawa wamekuwa watoto wa Mungu si kwa uwezo wa kibinadamu, wala kwa nguvu za kimwili, wala kwa mapenzi ya mtu, bali Mungu mwenyewe ndiye baba yao.
14The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
14Naye Neno akawa mwanadamu, akakaa kwetu. Nasi tumeuona utukufu wake, utukufu wake yeye aliye Mwana wa pekee wa Baba; amejaa neema na ukweli.
15John testified concerning Him. He cried out, saying, “This is He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’”
15Yohane aliwaambia watu habari zake, akasema kwa sauti, “Huyu ndiye niliyemtaja wakati niliposema: Anakuja mtu mmoja baada yangu ambaye ni mkuu kuliko mimi, maana alikuwako kabla mimi sijazaliwa.”
16From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace.
16Kutokana na ukamilifu wake sisi tumepokea neema mfululizo.
17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
17Maana Mungu alitoa Sheria kwa njia ya Mose, lakini neema na kweli vimekuja kwa njia ya Kristo.
18No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is at the Father’s side, has made Him known.
18Hakuna mtu aliyemwona Mungu wakati wowote ule. Mwana wa pekee aliye sawa na Mungu ambaye ameungana na Baba, ndiye aliyetujulisha habari za Mungu.
19And this was John’s testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”
19Huu ndio ushahidi Yohane alioutoa wakati viongozi wa Wayahudi kule Yerusalemu walipowatuma makuhani wa Walawi kwake wamwulize: “Wewe u nani?”
20He did not refuse to confess, but openly declared, “I am not the Christ.”
20Yohane hakukataa kujibu swali hilo, bali alisema waziwazi, “Mimi siye Kristo.”
21“Then who are you?” they inquired. “Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”
21Hapo wakamwuliza, “Basi, wewe ni nani? Je, wewe ni Eliya?” Yohane akajibu, “La, mimi siye.” Wakamwuliza, “Je, wewe ni yule nabii?” Yohane akawajibu, “La!”
22So they said to him, “Who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
22Nao wakamwuliza, “Basi, wewe ni nani? Wasema nini juu yako mwenyewe? Tuambie, ili tuwapelekee jibu wale waliotutuma.”
23John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet: “I am a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
23Yohane akawajibu, “Mimi ndiye yule ambaye nabii Isaya alisema habari zake: Sauti ya mtu imesikika jangwani: Nyoosheni njia ya Bwana.”
24Then the Pharisees who had been sent
24Hao watu walikuwa wametumwa na Mafarisayo.
25asked him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
25Basi, wakamwuliza Yohane, “Kama wewe si Kristo, wala Eliya, wala yule nabii, mbona wabatiza?”
26“I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands One you do not know.
26Yohane akawajibu, “Mimi nabatiza kwa maji, lakini yuko mmoja kati yenu, msiyemjua bado.
27He is the One who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”
27Huyo anakuja baada yangu, lakini mimi sistahili hata kumfungua kamba za viatu vyake.”
28All this happened at Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
28Mambo haya yalifanyika huko Bethania, ng'ambo ya mto Yordani ambako Yohane alikuwa anabatiza.
29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
29Kesho yake, Yohane alimwona Yesu akimjia, akasema, “Huyu ndiye Mwana-kondoo wa Mungu aondoaye dhambi ya ulimwengu!
30This is He of whom I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’
30Huyu ndiye niliyesema juu yake: Baada yangu anakuja mtu mmoja aliye mkuu zaidi kuliko mimi, maana alikuwako kabla mimi sijazaliwa!
31I myself did not know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.”
31Mimi mwenyewe sikumfahamu, lakini nimekuja kubatiza kwa maji ili watu wa Israeli wapate kumjua.”
32Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and resting on Him.
32Huu ndio ushahidi Yohane alioutoa: “Nilimwona Roho akishuka kama njiwa kutoka mbinguni na kutua juu yake.
33I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
33Mimi sikumjua, lakini yule aliyenituma nikabatize watu kwa maji alikuwa ameniambia: Mtu yule utakayemwona Roho akimshukia kutoka mbinguni na kukaa juu yake, huyo ndiye anayebatiza kwa Roho Mtakatifu.
34I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
34Mimi nimeona na ninawaambieni kwamba huyu ndiye Mwana wa Mungu.”
35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
35Kesho yake, Yohane alikuwa tena mahali hapo pamoja na wanafunzi wake wawili.
36When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
36Alipomwona Yesu akipita akasema, “Tazameni! Huyu ndiye Mwana-kondoo wa Mungu.”
37And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.
37Hao wanafunzi walimsikia Yohane akisema maneno hayo, wakamfuata Yesu.
38Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?” He asked. They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?”
38Basi, Yesu aligeuka, na alipowaona hao wanafunzi wanamfuata, akawauliza, “Mnatafuta nini?” Nao wakamjibu, “Rabi (yaani Mwalimu), unakaa wapi?”
39“Come and see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and spent that day with Him. It was about the tenth hour.
39Yesu akawaambia, “Njoni, nanyi mtaona.” Hao wanafunzi wakamfuata, wakaona mahali alipokuwa anakaa, wakashinda naye siku hiyo. Ilikuwa yapata saa kumi jioni.
40Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John’s testimony and followed Jesus.
40Andrea, nduguye Simoni Petro, alikuwa mmoja wa hao wawili waliokuwa wamemsikia Yohane akisema hivyo, wakamfuata Yesu.
41He first found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated as Christ).
41Andrea alimkuta kwanza Simoni, ndugu yake, akamwambia, “Tumemwona Masiha” (maana yake Kristo).
42Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated as Peter).
42Kisha akampeleka Simoni kwa Yesu. Naye Yesu akamtazama Simoni akasema, “Wewe ni Simoni mwana wa Yohane. Sasa utaitwa Kefa.” (maana yake ni Petro, yaani, “Mwamba.”)
43The next day Jesus decided to set out for Galilee. Finding Philip, He told him, “Follow Me.”
43Kesho yake Yesu aliamua kwenda Galilaya. Basi, akamkuta Filipo, akamwambia, “Nifuate.”
44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the same town as Andrew and Peter.
44Filipo alikuwa mwenyeji wa Bethsaida, mji wa akina Andrea na Petro.
45Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law, the One the prophets foretold—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
45Naye Filipo akamkuta Nathanieli, akamwambia, “Tumemwona yule ambaye Mose aliandika juu yake katika kitabu cha Sheria, na ambaye manabii waliandika habari zake, yaani Yesu Mwana wa Yosefu, kutoka Nazareti.”
46“Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
46Naye Nathanieli akamwuliza Filipo, “Je, kitu chema chaweza kutoka Nazareti?” Filipo akamwambia, “Njoo uone.”
47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, He said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is no deceit.”
47Yesu alipomwona Nathanieli akimjia alisema juu yake, “Tazameni! Huyo ni Mwisraeli halisi: hamna hila ndani yake.”
48“How do You know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
48Naye Nathanieli akamwuliza, “Umepataje kunijua?” Yesu akamwambia, “Ulipokuwa chini ya mtini hata kabla Filipo hajakuita, nilikuona.”
49“Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
49Hapo Nathanieli akamwambia, “Mwalimu, wewe ni Mwana wa Mungu. Wewe ni Mfalme wa Israeli!”
50Jesus said to him, “Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.”
50Yesu akamwambia, “Je, umeamini kwa kuwa nimekwambia kwamba nilikuona chini ya mtini? Utaona makubwa zaidi kuliko haya.”
51Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
51Yesu akaendelea kusema, “Nawaambieni kweli, mtaona mbingu zinafunguka na malaika wa Mungu wakipanda na kushuka juu ya Mwana wa Mtu.”
