Tongan Bible, Revised West Version
1Then there shall be found in the land, which the Lord thy God will give thee, the corpse of a man slain, and it is not known who is guilty of the murder,
1“Kapau ʻoku ʻilo ha tokotaha kuo tāmateʻi ʻi he fonua ʻaia ʻoku foaki ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua ke ke maʻu, kuo tuku ʻi he ngoue, pea ʻoku ʻikai ʻilo pe ko hai kuo ne tāmateʻi ia:
2Thy ancients and judges shall go out, and shall measure from the place where the body lieth the distance of every city round about:
2ʻE toki haʻu ai hoʻo kau mātuʻa mo hoʻo kau fakamaau, pea tenau fakafuofua ki he ngaahi kolo ʻoku tuʻu takatakai ʻiate ia kuo fakapoongi:
3And the ancients of that city which they shall perceive to be nearer than the rest, shall take a heifer of the herd, that hath not drawn in the yoke, nor ploughed the ground,
3Pea ʻe pehē, ʻilonga ʻae kolo ʻoku ofi ki he tangata kuo tāmateʻi, ʻio ʻae kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo ko ia, tenau ʻomi ha pulu fefine mui ʻaia naʻe ʻikai ngāueʻaki, pea naʻe ʻikai toho meʻa ʻi ha haʻamonga;
4And they shall bring her into a rough and stony valley, that never was ploughed, nor sown: and there they shall strike off the head of the heifer:
4Pea ʻe ʻomi ʻe he kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo ko ia ʻae pulu fefine mui ki ha teleʻa tokakovi, ʻaia ʻoku ʻikai keli pe tō, pea ʻe tutuʻu ai ʻae ʻulu ʻoe pulu fefine mui ʻi he teleʻa.
5And the priests the sons of Levi shall come, whom the Lord thy God hath chosen to minister to him, and to bless in his name, and that by their word every matter should be decided, and whatsoever is clean or unclean should be judged.
5Pea ʻe haʻu ʻo ofi ʻae kau taulaʻeiki ko e ngaahi foha ʻo Livai: he kuo fili ʻakinautolu ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua ke tauhi kiate ia, pea ke fai ʻae tāpuaki ʻi he huafa ʻo Sihova: pea ʻe fakamaauʻaki ʻenau lea ʻae fakakikihi kotoa pē mo e tā kotoa pē:
6And the ancients of that city shall come to the person slain, and shall wash their hands over the heifer that was killed in the valley,
6Pea ko e kau mātuʻa kotoa pē ʻoe kolo ko ia, ʻaia ʻoku tuʻu ofi ki he tangata kuo tāmateʻi, tenau fanofano honau nima ʻi ʻolunga ʻi he pulu fefine mui ʻaia kuo tutuʻu hono ʻulu ʻi he teleʻa:
7And shall say: Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it.
7Pea tenau lea ʻo pehē, ‘Naʻe ʻikai lilingi ʻe homau nima ʻae toto ni, pea naʻe ʻikai mamata homau mata ki ai.
8Be merciful to thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, O Lord, and lay not innocent blood to their charge, in the midst of thy people Israel. And the guilt of blood shall be taken from them:
8Ke ke ʻaloʻofa, ʻE Sihova, ki ho kakai ʻIsileli, ʻaia kuo ke huhuʻi, pea ʻoua naʻa tuku ʻae hia ʻoe toto māʻoniʻoni ki ho kakai ʻIsileli. Pea ʻe fakamolemole ʻae toto kiate kinautolu.’
9And thou shalt be free from the innocent’s blood, that was shed, when thou shalt have done what the Lord hath commanded thee.
9ʻE pehē ʻa hoʻomou tukuange ai meiate kimoutolu ʻae hia ʻoe toto māʻoniʻoni, ʻoka ke ka fai ʻaia ʻoku totonu ʻi he ʻao ʻo Sihova.
10If thou go out to fight against thy enemies, and the Lord thy God deliver them into thy hand, and thou lead them away captives,
10¶ “ʻOka ke ka ʻalu atu ki he tau ki ho ngaahi fili, pea tuku mai ʻakinautolu ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua ki ho nima, pea kuo ke maʻu pōpula ʻakinautolu,
11And seest in the number of the captives a beautiful woman, and lovest her, and wilt have her to wife,
11Pea ʻoku ke mamata ʻi he kau pōpula ki ha fefine hoihoifua, pea ʻoku ke tokanga kiate ia koeʻuhi ke hoko ia ko ho uaifi:
12Thou shalt bring her into thy house: and she shall shave her hair, and pare her nails,
12pehē, te ke ʻomi ia ki ʻapi ki ho fale: pea te ne tekefua ia, pea fakanounou hono ngeʻesinima.
13And shall put off the raiment, wherein she was taken: and shall remain in thy house, and mourn for her father and mother one month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and shalt sleep with her, and she shall be thy wife.
13Pea ʻe toʻo ʻe ia ʻae kofu ʻo ʻene pōpula ʻiate ia, pea ʻe nofo ia ʻi ho fale, pea ʻe tēngihia ʻe ia ʻene tamai mo ʻene faʻē ʻi he māhina kātoa ʻe taha: pea hili ia, ʻe ngofua hoʻo toki ʻalu kiate ia, ʻo hoko ko hono husepāniti, pea ʻe hoko ia ko ho uaifi ʻoʻou.
14Rut if afterwards she please thee not, thou shalt let her go free, but thou mayst not sell her for money nor oppress her by might because thou hast humbled her.
14Pea ʻe pehē, kapau ʻoku ʻikai te ke fiemālie siʻi ʻiate ia, te ke toki tukuange ia ke ʻalu ʻo faʻiteliha pe ia; ka ʻe ʻikai ʻaupito te ke fakatauʻaki ia ʻae paʻanga, ke ʻoua naʻa ke meʻa fakatauʻaki ia, koeʻuhi kuo ke fakavaivaiʻi ia.
15If a man have two wives, one beloved, and the other hated, and they have had children by him, and the son of the hated be the firstborn,
16And he meaneth to divide his substance among his sons: he may not make the son of the beloved the firstborn, and prefer him before the son of the hated.
16Pea ʻe hoko ʻo pehē, ʻi heʻene fai ke fakahoko hono ngaahi foha ke maʻu ʻaia ʻoku ʻaʻana, ʻoku ʻikai lelei ke ngaohi ʻae tama ʻae ʻofeina ke ʻuluaki ia ʻo tuʻukimuʻa ʻi he tama ʻae fehiʻanekina, ʻaia ko e ʻuluaki fānau moʻoni :
17But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, and shall give him a double portion of all he hath: for this is the first of his children, and to him are due the first birthrights.
17Ka ʻe fakahā ʻe ia ʻae tama ʻae fehiʻanekina ko e ʻuluaki tupu, ʻi heʻene ʻatu kiate ia ʻae vāhenga ʻe ua ʻi he meʻa kotoa pē ʻoku ne maʻu, he ko e kamataʻanga ia ʻo hono mālohi; ʻoku ʻaʻana pe ʻae lelei ʻoe ʻuluaki tupu.
18If a man have a stubborn and unruly son, who will not hear the commandments of his father or mother, and being corrected, slighteth obedience:
18¶ “Kapau ʻoku maʻu ʻe ha tangata ha foha ʻoku paongataʻa mo angatuʻu, ʻaia ʻoku ʻikai ʻaupito fai talangofua ki he leʻo ʻo ʻene tamai, pe ki he leʻo ʻo ʻene faʻē, pea ʻi heʻena tautea ia, ʻoku ʻikai tokanga ia kiate kinaua:
19They shall take him and bring him to the ancients of his city, and to the gate of judgment,
19ʻE toki puke ia ʻe heʻene tamai mo ʻene faʻē, ʻo ʻomi ia kituʻa ki he kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo, pea ki he matapā ʻo honau potu;
20And shall say to them: This our son is rebellious and stubborn, he slighteth hearing our admonitions, he giveth himself to revelling, and to debauchery and banquetings:
20Pea te na pehē ki he kau mātuʻa ʻoe kolo, ‘Ko homa foha ko eni ʻoku paongataʻa mo angatuʻu, ʻoku ʻikai tui ia ki heʻema fekau: ko e ʻuakai ia mo e konā.’
21The people of the city shall stone him: and he shall die, that you may take away the evil out of the midst of you, and all Israel hearing it may be afraid.
21Pea ʻe tolongaki ia ʻe he kau tangata kotoa pē ʻa hono kolo ʻaki ʻae maka, ke mate ai ia: ʻe pehē pe hoʻo motuhi ai ʻae kovi meiate kimoutolu; pea ʻe fanongo ki ai ʻe ʻIsileli kotoa pē, pea manavahē.
22When a man hath committed a crime for which he is to be punished with death, and being condemned to die is hanged on a gibbet:
22¶ “Pea kapau kuo fai angahala ʻe ha tangata ʻaia ʻoku totonu ke mate ai ia, pea kuo tonu ke tāmateʻi ia, pea ʻoku ke tautau ia ki he ʻakau:
23His body shall not remain upon the tree, but shall be buried the same day: for he is accursed of God that hangeth on a tree: and thou shalt not defile thy land, which the Lord thy God shall give thee in possession.
23ʻE ʻikai tuku hono sino ʻi he ʻakau ʻi he pō ʻo ʻaho, ka te ke tanu moʻoni ia ʻi he ʻaho ko ia: (he ko ia kuo tautau ko e malaʻia ia ʻi he ʻOtua;) koeʻuhi ke ʻoua naʻa halaia ho fonua, ʻaia ʻoku foaki ʻe Sihova ko ho ʻOtua kiate koe ko ho tofiʻa.
