1And David spoke to the Lord the words of this canticle, in the day that the Lord delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul,
1And David sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
2And he said: The Lord is my rock, and my strength, and my saviour.
2He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.
3God is my strong one, in him will I trust: my shield, and the horn of my salvation: he lifteth me up, and is my refuge: my saviour, thou wilt deliver me from iniquity.
3My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation. My stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, You save me from violence.
4I will call on the Lord who is worthy to be praised: and I shall be saved from my enemies.
4I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.
5For the pangs of death have surrounded me: the floods of Belial have made me afraid.
5For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of chaos overwhelmed me.
6The cords of hell compassed me: the snares of death prevented me.
6The cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.
7In my distress I will call upon the Lord, and I will cry to my God: and he will hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry shall come to his ears.
7In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried out to my God. And from His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for help reached His ears.
8The earth shook and trembled, the foundations of the mountains were moved, and shaken, because he was angry with them.
8Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they were shaken because He burned with anger.
9A smoke went up from his nostrils, and a devouring fire out of his mouth: coals were kindled by it.
9Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; glowing coals blazed forth.
10He bowed the heavens, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.
10He parted the heavens and came down with dark clouds beneath His feet.
11And he rode upon the cherubims, and flew: and slid upon the wings of the wind.
11He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind.
12He made darkness a covering round about him: dropping waters out of the clouds of the heavens.
12He made darkness a canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds.
13By the brightness before him, the coals of fire were kindled.
13From the brightness of His presence coals of fire blazed forth.
14The Lord shall thunder from heaven: and the most high shall give forth his voice.
14The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded.
15He shot arrows and scattered them: lightning, and consumed them.
15He shot His arrows and scattered the foes; He hurled lightning and routed them.
16And the overflowings of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were laid open at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the spirit of his wrath.
16The channels of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.
17He sent from on high, and took me, and drew me out of many waters.
17He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.
18He delivered me from my most mighty enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.
18He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty for me.
19He prevented me in the day of my affliction, and the Lord became my stay.
19They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD was my support.
20And he brought me forth into a large place, he delivered me, because I pleased him.
20He brought me out into the open; He rescued me because He delighted in me.
21The Lord will reward me according to my justice: and according to the cleanness of my hands he will render to me.
21The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands.
22Because I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God.
23For all his judgments are in my sight: and his precepts I have not removed from me.
23For all His ordinances are before me; I have not disregarded His statutes.
24And I shall be perfect with him: and shall keep myself from my iniquity.
24And I have been blameless before Him and kept myself from iniquity.
25And the Lord will recompense me according to my justice: and according to the cleanness of my hands in the sight of his eyes.
25So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight.
26With the holy one thou wilt be holy: and with the valiant perfect.
26To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, to the blameless You show Yourself blameless;
27With the elect thou wilt be elect: and with the perverse thou wilt be perverted.
27to the pure You show Yourself pure, but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd.
28And the poor people thou wilt save: and with thy eyes thou wilt humble the haughty.
28You save an afflicted people, but Your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.
29For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and thou, O Lord, wilt enlighten my darkness.
29For You, O LORD, are my lamp; the LORD lights up my darkness.
30For in thee I will run girded: in my God I will leap over the wall.
30For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall.
31God, his way is immaculate, the word of the Lord is tried by fire: he is the shield of all that trust in him.
31As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
32Who is God but the Lord: and who is strong but our God?
32For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?
33God who hath girded me with strength, and made my way perfect.
33God is my strong fortress and He makes my way clear.
34Making my feet like the feet of harts, and setting me upon my high places.
34He makes my feet like those of a deer and stations me upon the heights.
35He teacheth my bands to war: and maketh my arms like a bow of brass.
35He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
36Thou hast given me the shield of my salvation: and thy mildness hath multiplied me.
36You have given me Your shield of salvation, and Your gentleness exalts me.
37Thou shalt enlarge my steps under me: and my ankles shall not fail.
37You broaden the path beneath me so that my ankles do not give way.
38I will pursue after my enemies, and crush them: and will not return again till I consume them.
38I pursued my enemies and destroyed them; I did not turn back until they were consumed.
39I will consume them and break them in pieces, so that they shall not rise: they shall fall under my feet.
39I devoured and crushed them so they could not rise; they have fallen under my feet.
40Thou hast girded me with strength to battle: thou hast made them that resisted me to bow under me.
40You have armed me with strength for battle; You have subdued my foes beneath me.
41My enemies thou hast made to turn their back to me: them that hated me, and I shall destroy them.
41You have made my enemies retreat before me; I put an end to those who hated me.
42They shall cry, and there shall be none to save: to the Lord, and he shall not hear them.
42They looked, but there was no one to save them— to the LORD, but He did not answer.
43I shall beat them as small as the dust of the earth: I shall crush them and spread them abroad like the mire of the streets.
43I ground them as the dust of the earth; I crushed and trampled them like mud in the streets.
44Thou wilt save me from the contradictions of my people: thou wilt keep me to be the head of the Gentiles: the people which I know not, shall serve me,
44You have delivered me from the strife of my people; You have preserved me as the head of nations; a people I had not known shall serve me.
45The sons of the stranger will resist me, at the hearing of the ear they will obey me.
45Foreigners cower before me; when they hear me, they obey me.
46The strangers are melted away, and shall be straitened in their distresses.
46Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their strongholds.
47The Lord liveth, and my God is blessed: and the strong God of my salvation shall be exalted:
47The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock! And may God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted—
48God who giveth me revenge, and bringest down people under me,
48the God who avenges me and brings down nations beneath me,
49Who bringest me forth from my enemies, and liftest me up from them that resist me: from the wicked man thou shalt deliver me.
49who frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes; You rescue me from violent men.
50Therefore will I give thanks to thee. O Lord, among the Gentiles, and will sing to thy name.
50Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name.
51Giving great salvation to his king, and shewing mercy to David his anointed, and to his seed for ever.
51Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows loving devotion to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”
