1To nathuem ah Israel siangpahrang om ai vop; to nathuem ah Dan acaeng loe qawk ah toep hanah a ohhaih ahmuen to pakrong o; to nathuem ah nihcae loe Israel acaengnawk thung hoiah qawktoep han ih tawn o ai vop.
1In those days there was no king in Israel, and the tribe of the Danites was looking for territory to occupy. For up to that time they had not come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.
2To pongah Dan kaminawk loe prae pakrong hanah, Zorah hoi Estaol vangpui hoiah misa kahoih moe, tha kacak angmacae ih kami pangato patoeh o; nihcae loe caeh oh moe, Ephraim mae nui ah kaom Mikah im ah akun o; to ah qumto a iih o.
2So the Danites sent out five men from their clans, men of valor from Zorah and Eshtaol, to spy out the land and explore it. “Go and explore the land,” they told them. The men entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah, where they spent the night.
3Nihcae Mikah im ah phak o naah, thendoeng Levi ih lok to maat o pongah, to ah akun o moe, anih khaeah, Mi mah maw hae ah ang caeh haih? Tipongah hae ah na oh loe? tiah a naa o.
3And while they were near Micah’s house, they recognized the voice of the young Levite; so they went over and asked him, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? Why are you here?”
4To naah Levi mah nihcae khaeah, Mikah mah sak ih hmuen to a thuih pae; hae kami mah kai ang tlai pongah, anih ih qaima ah ka oh, tiah a naa.
4“Micah has done this and that for me,” he replied, “and he has hired me to be his priest.”
5To naah nihcae mah Levi khaeah, Kholong ka caeh o haih hae amkah tih maw? Sithaw khaeah na dueng paeh, tiah a naa o.
5Then they said to him, “Please inquire of God to determine whether we will have a successful journey.”
6Qaima mah nihcae khaeah, Lunghoihta hoiah caeh oh, Angraeng mah na caehhaih loklam patuek boeh, tiah a naa.
6And the priest told them, “Go in peace. The LORD is watching over your journey.”
7To pongah to kami pangatonawk loe to ahmuen hoiah angthawk o moe, Laish vangpui ah caeh o; to ah kaom kaminawk loe Sidon kaminawk baktiah misa zithaih tawn o ai, kamong ah khosak o; nihcae azatpaw hanah prae thungah zaehoikung tawn o ai, nihcae loe Sidon kaminawk hoiah angthla o parai, mi hoiah doeh angbethaih tawn o ai, tiah a hnuk o.
7So the five men departed and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living securely, like the Sidonians, tranquil and unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking in the land and no oppressive ruler. And they were far away from the Sidonians and had no alliance with anyone.
8To pacoengah Zorah hoi Estaol vangpui ah amlaem o let; to naah angmah ih nawkamyanawk mah, Khoqam hnukhaih dan kawbangmaw oh? tiah a dueng o.
8When the men returned to Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers asked them, “What did you find?”
9Nihcae mah, Angthawk oh; nihcae to tuh si! Khenah, kahoih parai prae to ka hnuk o boeh; nang hngai o duem han maw? Prae thungah akun moe, qawktoep hanah mong o sut hmah.
9They answered, “Come on, let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and it is very good. Why would you fail to act? Do not hesitate to go there and take possession of the land!
10To ahmuen to na phak o naah, misa zithaih tawn ai ah khosah kaminawk hoi kalen parai prae to na hnu o tih; Sithaw mah to prae to nangcae ban ah paek tih; to ahmuen ah loe long nuiah kaom hmuennawk to akoep boih boeh, tiah a naa o.
10When you enter, you will come to an unsuspecting people and a spacious land, for God has delivered it into your hand. It is a place where nothing on earth is lacking.”
11To pongah Dan acaeng kami cumvai taruktonawk loe, Zorah hoi Eshtaol hoiah misatukhaih maiphaw maica to sinh o moe, a caeh o.
11So six hundred Danites departed from Zorah and Eshtaol, armed with weapons of war.
12Nihcae loe caeh o moe, Judah prae Kirith-Jearim vangpui ah atai o; to pongah Kirith-Jearim vangpui niduem bangah kaom, to ahmuen to Mahaneh-Dan, tiah vaihni ni khoek to kawk o.
12They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. That is why the place west of Kiriath-jearim is called Mahaneh-dan to this day.
13Nihcae loe Ephraim mae nuiah caeh o moe, Mikah ih im to phak o.
13And from there they traveled to the hill country of Ephraim and came to Micah’s house.
14To naah Laish vangpui pakrong han caeh kami pangatonawk mah, angmacae nawkamya khaeah, Hae ih im thungah kahni maeto, teraphim ih krang, phoisa hoiah daengh ih krang, phoisa atui pakaw moe, sak ih krangnawk oh, tiah na panoek o maw? To vaihi timaw na sak o han, tiah poek oh, tiah a naa.
14Then the five men who had gone to spy out the land of Laish said to their brothers, “Did you know that one of these houses has an ephod, household gods, a graven image, and a molten idol? Now think about what you should do.”
15Nihcae loe angqoi o moe, Mikah ih im ah kaom, thendoeng Levi khaeah caeh o pacoengah, anih to lok tapring o.
15So they turned aside there and went to the home of the young Levite, the house of Micah, and greeted him.
16Misatuk hanah amsak Dan kami cumvai taruktonawk loe, khongkha taengah angdoet o.
16The six hundred Danites stood at the entrance of the gate, armed with their weapons of war.
17Laish prae khet hanah caeh kami pangatonawk loe, Mikah imthung ah akun o moe, phoisa hoiah daengh sak ih krang, kahni, teraphim krang hoi phoisa atui pakaw moe, sak ih krangnawk to a lak o; qaima loe misatuk hanah amsak kami cumvai taruktonawk hoi nawnto khongkha taengah angdoet.
17And the five men who had gone to spy out the land went inside and took the graven image, the ephod, the household idols, and the molten idol, while the priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred armed men.
18To kaminawk loe Mikah ih imthung ah akun o moe, daengh ih krang, kahni, teraphim krang hoi atui pakaw moe, sak ih krangnawk to lak o. To pacoengah qaima mah nihcae khaeah, Timaw na sak o loe? tiah a naa.
18When they entered Micah’s house and took the graven image, the ephod, the household idols, and the molten idol, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”
19Nihcae mah qaima khaeah, Om duem ah, na pakha to ban hoi tamuep loe, kaicae hoi nawnto angzo ah; kaicae khae angzoh loe, kaicae ih ampa hoi qaima ah om ah; imthung takoh maeto ih qaima ah oh pongah loe, Israel acaeng hoi imthung takoh ih qaima ah oh to hoih kue ai maw? tiah a naa o.
19“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
20To naah qaima loe anghoe moe, kahni, teraphim krang hoi daeng ih krang to lak moe, to kaminawk khaeah a caeh.
20So the priest was glad and took the ephod, the household idols, and the graven image, and went with the people.
21To kaminawk mah nawktanawk, im ah pacah ih moinawk hoi a tawnh o ih hmuenmaenawk to hmabang ah caeh o sak, angmacae to loe hnukah caeh o.
21Putting their small children, their livestock, and their possessions in front of them, they turned and departed.
22Mikah im hoiah tacawt o pacoengah, Mikah im taengah kaom kaminawk loe nawnto amkhueng o moe, Dan kaminawk to patom o.
22After they were some distance from Micah’s house, the men in the houses near Micah’s house mobilized and overtook the Danites.
23Nihcae mah hnukbang hoiah hangh o thuih naah, Dan kaminawk loe hnukbang ah angqoi o moe, Mikah khaeah, Tih raihaih maw na tawnh moe, kaminawk hoi nawnto kaicae nang patom? tiah a naa o.
23When they called out after them, the Danites turned to face them and said to Micah, “What is the matter with you that you have called out such a company?”
24Anih mah, Ka sak ih sithawnawk hoi kai ih qaima to na lak o moe, na caeh o haih ving pongah ni; to hmuenawk ai ah loe tih kalah hmuen maw ka tawnh vop? Nangcae mah tih raihaih maw na tawnh? tiah lok nang dueng o lat loe, tiah a naa.
24He replied, “You took the gods I had made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
25Dan kaminawk mah anih khaeah, Na lok thaih han ka koeh o ai; to tih ai nahaeloe palungphui kaminawk mah na hmang o ueloe, nangmah hoi na imthung takoh kaminawk ih hinghaih to amro moeng tih, tiah a naa o.
25The Danites said to him, “Do not raise your voice against us, or angry men will attack you, and you and your family will lose your lives.”
26Dan kaminawk mah anih to caeh o taak poe; Mikah mah nihcae to ka pazawk thai mak ai, tiah panoek naah, angmah im ah amlaem taak.
26So the Danites went on their way, and Micah turned to go back home, because he saw that they were too strong for him.
27Mikah mah sak ih hmuennawk to nihcae mah lak o moe, anih ih qaima to hoih pae o ving pacoengah, mawnhaih om ai ah khosah kaminawk ohhaih Laish vangpui ah a caeh o; nihcae to sumsen hoiah tuk o moe, vangpui to hmai hoiah thlaek pae o.
27After they had taken Micah’s idols and his priest, they went to Laish, to a tranquil and unsuspecting people, and they struck them with their swords and burned down the city.
28Sidon hoi angthla parai ahmuen ah oh o moe, mi hoiah doeh angpehhaih tawn o ai pongah, nihcae pahlongkung mi doeh om ai; vangpui loe Beth-Rehob taeng ih azawn ah oh. Dan kaminawk mah vangpui to sak o moe, to ahmuen ah oh o.
28There was no one to deliver them, because the city was far from Sidon and had no alliance with anyone; it was in a valley near Beth-rehob. And the Danites rebuilt the city and lived there.
29To vangpui kangquem ahmin loe Laish, tiah kawk o; toe amsae Israel mah sak ih a capa, Dan ih ahmin to lak o moe, vangpui to Dan, tiah a sak o.
29They named it Dan, after their forefather Dan, who was born to Israel—though the city was formerly named Laish.
30Dan kaminawk loe Mikah mah sak ih krang to suek o moe, Manasseh capa Gershom, Gershom capa Jonathan hoi anih ih caanawk loe, misong ah laem o ai karoek to, Dan acaengnawk ih qaima ah oh o.
30The Danites set up idols for themselves, and Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
31Sithaw ih im Shiloh ah oh nathung, Mikah mah sak ih krang ni nihcae mah patoh o poe.
31So they set up for themselves Micah’s graven image, and it was there the whole time the house of God was in Shiloh.
