1After the time of Abimelech, a man of Issachar, Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, rose up to save Israel. He lived in Shamir, in the hill country of Ephraim.
1Sau A-bi-mê-léc, Thô-la, con trai Phu-a, cháu Đô-đô, người Y-sa-ca, dấy lên đặng giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên. Người ở tại Sa-mia trong núi Eùp-ra-im,
2Tola judged Israel twenty-three years, and when he died, he was buried in Shamir.
3Tola was followed by Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years.
3Sau người ấy có Giai-rơ, người Ga-la-át, dấy lên, làm quan xét Y-sơ-ra-ên trong hai mươi hai năm.
4He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys. And they had thirty towns in the land of Gilead, which to this day are called Havvoth-jair.
4Người có ba mươi con trai, cỡi ba mươi lừa con, và có ba mươi cái thành ở tại xứ Ga-la-át; ngày nay người ta cũng còn gọi nó là thôn Giai-rơ.
5When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.
5Khi Giai-rơ thác thì được chôn tại Kha-môn.
6And again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD. They served the Baals, the Ashtoreths, the gods of Aram, Sidon, and Moab, and the gods of the Ammonites and Philistines. Thus they forsook the LORD and did not serve Him.
6Kế ấy, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên lại làm điều ác trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va, phục sự những Ba-anh và Aùt-tạt-tê, cùng các thần Sy-ri, các thần Si-đôn, các thần Mô-áp, các thần người Am-môn, và các thần của dân Phi-li-tin: chúng lìa bỏ Đức Giê-hô-va không phục sự Ngài.
7So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and Ammonites,
7Cơn thạnh nộ của Đức Giê-hô-va bèn nổi phừng cùng Y-sơ-ra-ên; Ngài phó chúng nó vào tay dân Phi-li-tin và vào tay người Am-môn.
8who that very year harassed and oppressed the Israelites, and did so for eighteen years to all the Israelites on the other side of the Jordan in Gilead, the land of the Amorites.
8Kể từ năm đó, hai dân tộc nầy hà hiếp và chà nát dân Y-sơ-ra-ên: những người Y-sơ-ra-ên ở bên kia sông Giô-đanh trong xứ A-mô-rít, tại miền Ga-la-át, bị hà hiếp, chà nát trong mười tám năm.
9The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, and Israel was in deep distress.
9Dân Am-môn cũng sang qua sông Giô-đanh, đánh Giu-đa, Bên-gia-min, và nhà Eùp-ra-im; Y-sơ-ra-ên bị cơn hoạn nạn lớn lao vậy.
10Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, saying, “We have sinned against You, for we have indeed forsaken our God and served the Baals.”
10Bấy giờ dân Y-sơ-ra-ên kêu cầu Đức Giê-hô-va, mà rằng: Chúng tôi có phạm tội cùng Chúa, vì chúng tôi đã lìa bỏ Đức Chúa Trời chúng tôi, và hầu việc các thần Ba-anh.
11The LORD replied, “When the Egyptians, Amorites, Ammonites, Philistines,
11Nhưng Đức Giê-hô-va đáp cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: Ta há chẳng có giải cứu các ngươi khỏi dân Ê-díp-tô, khỏi dân A-mô-rít, khỏi dân Am-môn, và khỏi dân Phi-li-tin sao?
12Sidonians, Amalekites, and Maonites oppressed you and you cried out to Me, did I not save you from their hands?
13But you have forsaken Me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.
14Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you in your time of trouble.”
15“We have sinned,” the Israelites said to the LORD. “Deal with us as You see fit; but please deliver us today!”
15Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên thưa cùng Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: Chúng tôi đã phạm tội! Xin Chúa hãy đãi chúng tôi theo điều Chúa cho là tốt lành, chỉ xin hãy giải cứu chúng tôi ngày nay!
16So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD, and He could no longer bear the misery of Israel.
16Họ bèn cất khỏi giữa mình các tà thần, rồi trở lại phục sự Đức Giê-hô-va; lòng Ngài buồn rầu về sự khốn khổ của Y-sơ-ra-ên.
17Then the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, and the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.
17Dân Am-môn nhóm lại, và đóng trại trong xứ Ga-la-át. Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên cũng nhóm lại, và đóng trại tại Mích-ba.
18And the rulers of Gilead said to one another, “Whoever will launch the attack against the Ammonites will be the head of all who live in Gilead.”
