Coptic New Testament
1Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
1⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲣⲉⲣⲟⲩⲙⲏϣ ⳿ⲛⲣⲉϥϯ⳿ⲥⲃⲱ ⲛⲁ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⲉⲣⲉⲧⲉⲛⲥⲱⲟⲩⲛ ϫⲉ ⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲛⲁϭⲓ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩϩⲁⲡ.
2We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to control his whole body.
2ⲧⲉⲛϩⲓⲱⲟⲩⲧ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲙⲏϣ ⳿ⲛⲥⲟⲡ ⲫⲏⲉⲧⲉ ⳿ⲛ⳿ϥϩⲓⲱⲟⲩⲧ ⲁⲛ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲥⲁϫⲓ ⲫⲁⲓ ⲟⲩⲧⲉⲗⲓⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲣⲱⲙⲓ ⳿ⲉⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⳿ϣϫⲟⲙ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⳿ⲉϭⲓⲭⲁⲗⲓⲛⲟⲩⲥ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓⲥⲱⲙⲁ ⲧⲏⲣϥ.
3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can guide the whole animal.
3ⲓⲥϫⲉ ⲧⲉⲛϯⲭⲁⲗⲓⲛⲟⲩⲥ ⳿ⲉⲣⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲛⲓ⳿ϩⲑⲱⲣ ⳿ⲉ⳿ⲡϫⲓⲛⲧⲟⲩⲥⲱⲧⲉⲙ ⳿ⲛⲥⲱⲛ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲧⲉⲛⲥⲱⲕ ⳿ⲙⲡⲟⲩⲥⲱⲙⲁ ⲧⲏⲣϥ.
4Consider ships as well. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot is inclined.
4ϩⲏⲡⲡⲉ ⲓⲥ ⲛⲓⲉϫⲏⲟⲩ ⲉⲧⲉ ⳿ⲛⲧⲁⲓⲙⲁⲓⲏ ⲉⲩⲥⲱⲕ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲟⲩ ϩⲓⲧⲉⲛ ϩⲁⲛⲑⲏⲟⲩ ⲉⲩⲛⲁϣⲧ ϣⲁⲩ⳿ⲉⲛⲟⲩ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲕⲟⲩϫⲓ ⳿ⲛϩⲓⲏ ⳿ⲉ⳿ⲫⲙⲁ ⲉⲧⲉϥⲛⲁⲟⲩⲱϣ ⳿ⲉϯ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉϥⲟⲩⲟⲓ ⳿ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲡⲓⲣⲉϥⲉⲣϩⲉⲙⲓ.
5In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider how small a spark sets a great forest ablaze.
5ⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ ϩⲱϥ ⲡⲓⲗⲁⲥ ⲟⲩⲕⲟⲩϫⲓ ⳿ⲙⲙⲉⲗⲟⲥ ⲡⲉ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ϥⲥⲁϫⲓ ⳿ⲛϩⲁⲛⲙⲉⲧⲛⲓϣϯ ϩⲏⲡⲡⲉ ⲓⲥ ⲟⲩⲕⲟⲩϫⲓ ⳿ⲛ⳿ⲭⲣⲱⲙ ⳿ϥⲣⲱⲕϩ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩϩⲩⲗⲏ ⲧⲏⲣⲥ.
6The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body. It pollutes the whole person, sets the course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
6ⲡⲓⲗⲁⲥ ϩⲱϥ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲭⲣⲱⲙ ⲡⲉ ⳿ⲡⲥⲟⲗⲥⲉⲗ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⳿ⲧ⳿ⲁⲇⲓⲕⲓⲁ ⲡⲓⲗⲁⲥ ⲭⲏ ⳿ⲉ⳿ϧⲣⲏⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲓⲙⲉⲗⲟⲥ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ϥϩⲓⲁϭⲛⲓ ⳿ⲛⲥⲁ ⲡⲓⲥⲱⲙⲁ ⲧⲏⲣϥ ⳿ϥⲣⲱⲕϩ ⳿ⲙⲡⲓ⳿ⲧⲣⲟⲭⲟⲥ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲓϫⲓⲛⲙⲓⲥⲓ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ϥⲣⲱⲕϩ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲉⲛ ϯⲅⲉⲉⲛⲛⲁ.
7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man,
7ⲫⲩⲥⲓⲥ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲛⲓⲃⲉⲛ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲛⲓⲑⲏⲣⲓⲟⲛ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲛⲓϩⲁⲗⲁϯ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲛⲓϭⲁⲧϥⲓ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲛⲏⲉⲧϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲓⲁⲙⲁⲓⲟⲩ ⲥⲉⲉⲣⲇⲁⲙⲁⲍⲓⲛ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲟⲩ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⲥⲉϭⲛⲟ ⳿ⲛϫⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛϯⲫⲩⲥⲓⲥ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ϯⲙⲉⲧⲣⲱⲙⲓ.
8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
8ⲡⲓⲗⲁⲥ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛⲑⲟϥ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟⲛ ⳿ϩⲗⲓ ⳿ⲛⲣⲱⲙⲓ ⳿ϣ⳿ⲑⲣⲟ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⳿ⲉϭⲛⲉϫⲱϥ ⲟⲩⲁⲧⲥⲉⲙⲛⲓ ⲡⲉ ⲉϥϩⲱⲟⲩ ⲉϥⲙⲉϩ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲑⲟⲩⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⳿ⲫⲙⲟⲩ.
9With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.
9ⲁⲛ⳿ⲥⲙⲟⲩ ⳿ⲉⲫϯ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲫⲓⲱⲧ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲛϧⲏⲧϥ ⲉⲛϩⲱⲟⲩϣ ⳿ⲉⲛⲓⲣⲱⲙⲓ ⲛⲏⲉⲧⲁϥⲑⲁⲙⲓⲱⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲫϯ ⲉⲩⲟⲛⲓ ⳿ⲙⲙⲟϥ.
10Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be!
10⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲁⲓⲣⲟ ⲣⲱ ⲥⲉⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲛϫⲉ ⲡⲓ⳿ⲥⲙⲟⲩ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡⲓⲥⲁϩⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⲡⲉⲧ⳿ⲥϣⲉ ⲁⲛ ϫⲉ ⲡⲉ ⲛⲁ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲛⲁⲓ ϣⲱⲡⲓ ⳿ⲙⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ.
11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
11ⲙⲏϯ ϣⲁⲣⲉ ϯⲙⲟⲩⲙⲓ ⲃⲉⲃⲓ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲧϩⲟⲗϫ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡⲉⲑⲙⲟⲗϩ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲁⲓⲟⲩⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⲣⲱ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲱⲧ.
12My brothers, can a fig tree grow olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
12ⲙⲏ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⳿ϣϫⲟⲙ ⲛⲁ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⳿ⲛⲟⲩⲃⲱ ⳿ⲛⲕⲉⲛⲧⲉ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲥ⳿ⲓⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛϩⲁⲛϫⲱⲓⲧ ⲓⲉ ⲟⲩⲃⲱ ⳿ⲛⲁⲗⲟⲗⲓ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲥ⳿ⲓⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛϩⲁⲛⲕⲉⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲁⲓⲣⲏϯ ⳿ⲛⲛⲉ ⲡⲉⲑⲙⲟⲗϩ ⲉⲣ ⲟⲩⲙⲱⲟⲩ ⲉϥϩⲟⲗϫ.
13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good conduct, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
13ⲛⲓⲙ ⳿ⲛⲥⲁⲃⲉ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛⲕⲁⲧϩⲏⲧ ⲉⲧϧⲉⲛ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ ⲙⲁⲣⲉϥⲧⲁⲙⲟⲛ ⳿ⲉⲛⲉϥ⳿ϩⲃⲏⲟⲩ⳿ⲓ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϧⲉⲛ ⲡⲉϥϫⲓⲛⲙⲟϣⲓ ⲉⲑⲛⲁⲛⲉϥ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲙⲉⲧⲣⲉⲙⲣⲁⲩϣ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲥⲃⲱ.
14But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth.
14ⲓⲥϫⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲭⲟϩ ⲉϥⲉⲛϣⲁϣⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ⲑⲏⲛⲟⲩ ⲛⲉⲙ ⳿ϣϭⲛⲏⲛ ⳿ⲛ⳿ϩⲣⲏⲓ ϧⲉⲛ ⲛⲉⲧⲉⲛϩⲏⲧ ⳿ⲙⲡⲉⲣϣⲟⲩϣⲟⲩ ⳿ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲟϩ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛϫⲉⲙⲉⲑⲛⲟⲩϫ ϧⲁ ϯⲙⲉⲑⲙⲏⲓ.
15Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.
15ⲧⲁⲓ⳿ⲥⲃⲱ ⲛⲁ⳿ⲥⲛⲏⲟⲩ ⲉⲡⲉⲥⲏⲧ ⲁⲛ ⲧⲉ ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲡϣⲱⲓ ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲑⲁ ⳿ⲡⲕⲁϩⲓ ⲧⲉ ⳿ⲙⲯⲩ ⲭⲓⲕⲏ ⳿ⲛ⳿ⲥⲙⲟⲧ ⳿ⲛⲇⲉⲙⲱⲛ.
16For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice.
16ⲡⲓⲙⲁ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉⲧⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲭⲟϩ ⲓⲉ ⳿ϣϭⲛⲏⲛ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲁⲣⲉ ⳿ⲡ⳿ϣⲑⲟⲣⲧⲉⲣ ⳿ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲉⲙ ϩⲱⲃ ⲛⲓⲃⲉⲛ ⲉⲧϩⲱⲟⲩ.
17But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere.
17ϯ⳿ⲥⲃⲱ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲧⲉ ⲟⲩ⳿ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⳿ⲙ⳿ⲡϣⲱⲓ ⳿ⲛϣⲟⲣⲡ ⲙⲉⲛ ⳿ⲥⲟⲩⲁⲃ ⲓⲧⲁ ⲟⲩⲣⲉϥⲉⲣϩⲓⲣⲏⲛⲏ ⲧⲉ ⲟⲩⲉⲡⲓⲕⲏⲥ ⲧⲉ ⲉⲥⲙⲉϩ ⳿ⲛⲛⲁⲓ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲟⲩⲧⲁϩ ⲉⲛⲁⲛⲉϥ ⲟⲩⲁⲧϯϩⲁⲡ ⳿ⲉⲣⲟⲥ ⲧⲉ ⲟⲩⲁⲧⲙⲉⲧϣⲟⲃⲓ ⲧⲉ.
18Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness.
18⳿ⲡⲟⲩⲧⲁϩ ⲇⲉ ⳿ⲛⲧⲉ ϯϩⲓⲣⲏⲛⲏ ⲛⲉⲙ ϯⲙⲉⲑⲙⲏⲓ ϣⲁⲩⲥⲁⲧϥ ϧⲉⲛ ⲟⲩϩⲓⲣⲏⲛⲏ ⳿ⲛⲛⲏⲉⲧ⳿⳿ⲓⲣⲓ ⳿ⲛϯϩⲓⲣⲏⲛⲏ
