1Pea naʻe tuʻu hengihengi hake ʻa Selupeali, ʻaia ko Kitione, mo e kakai kotoa pē naʻe ʻiate ia, ʻonau ʻapitanga fakataha ʻi he veʻe vai ʻo Haloti: pea naʻe ʻi he potu tokelau ʻae tau lahi ʻoe kakai Mitiane, ʻo ofi ki he tafungofunga ʻo Mole, ʻi he teleʻa.
1Early in the morning Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the men with him camped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.
2Pea naʻe pehē ʻe Sihova kia Kitione, “Ko e kakai ʻoku ʻiate koe kuo tokolahi fau, ke tuku ki honau nima ʻae kakai Mitiane, telia naʻa vikiviki ai ʻa ʻIsileli kiate au, ʻo pehē, Ko hoku nima pē ʻoʻoku kuo ne fakamoʻui au.
2Then the LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many people for Me to deliver Midian into their hands, lest Israel glorify themselves over Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’
3Pea ko eni, ke ke ʻalu, pea kalanga ʻi he telinga ʻoe kakai, ʻo pehē, ‘Ko ia fulipē ʻoku vaivai mo manavahē, ke foki ia ʻo ʻalu vave mei he moʻunga ko Kiliati.’” Pea naʻe foki ʻo ʻalu ʻae toko ua mano mo e toko ua afe ʻoe kakai; pea naʻe toe ʻae toko mano.
3Now, therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people: ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand of them turned back, but ten thousand remained.
4Pea naʻe folofola ʻa Sihova kia Kitione, “ʻOku kei tokolahi fau ʻae kakai: ke ke ʻomi ʻakinautolu ki he vai, pea te u ʻahiʻahiʻi ʻakinautolu ʻi ai maʻau: pea ʻe pehē, ko ia ʻoku ou pehē ai kiate koe, Ko eni ia ʻe ʻalu mo koe, ko ia ia te mo ō: pea ko ia fulipē ʻoku ou pehē ai kiate koe, Ko eni ia ʻe ʻikai ʻalu mo koe, ko ia ia ʻe ʻikai te mo ō.”
4Then the LORD said to Gideon, “There are still too many people. Take them down to the water, and I will sift them for you there. If I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go. But if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
5Ko ia ne ʻave ʻae kakai ki he vai pea naʻe folofola ʻa Sihova kia Kitione, “Ko ia fulipē ʻoku ʻemo ʻae vai ʻaki hono ʻelelo, ʻo hangē ko e ʻemo ʻae kulī, te ke tuku kehe ia: pea ʻe pehē mo ia fulipē ʻoku punou ʻo tūʻulutui ki hono tui ke inu.”
5So Gideon brought the people down to the water, and the LORD said to him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who kneel to drink.”
6And the number of those who lapped the water with their hands to their mouths was three hundred men; all the others knelt to drink.
7Then the LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men who lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. But all the others are to go home.”
8Ko ia naʻe toʻo ai ʻe he kakai ʻae meʻakai ʻi honau nima, mo ʻenau meʻalea: pea ne fekau hono toe ʻo ʻIsileli ʻae tangata taki taha ki hono fale fehikitaki, kae taʻofi ʻae kau tangata ʻe toko tolungeau ko ia: pea naʻe ʻi lalo ʻiate ia ʻae tau lahi ʻo Mitiane ʻi he teleʻa.
8So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred men, who took charge of the provisions and rams’ horns of the others. And the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley.
9¶ Pea naʻe hoko ʻo pehē ʻi he pō ko ia, naʻe folofola ʻa Sihova kiate ia, “Tuʻu hake, pea ke ʻalu hifo ki honau matatau; he kuo u tukuange ia ki ho nima.
9That night the LORD said to Gideon, “Get up and go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.
10Pea kapau ʻoku ke manavahē ke ʻalu hifo, mo ō mo Fiula ko ho tauhi ki he tau lahi:
10But if you are afraid to do so, then go down to the camp with your servant Purah
11Pea ke fanongo ki he meʻa ʻoku nau lau: pea hili ia ʻe mālohi ho nima ke ke ʻalu hifo ai ki he tau.” Pea naʻe ʻalu hifo ia mo Fiula ko hono tauhi ki he potu ʻituʻa ʻi he kau tangata toʻo mahafutau naʻe ʻi he tau.
11and listen to what they are saying. Then your hands will be strengthened to attack the camp.” So he went with Purah his servant to the outposts where armed men were guarding the camp.
12Pea naʻe mafola atu ʻi he teleʻa ʻae kakai Mitiane, mo e kakai ʻAmaleki, mo e fānau kotoa pē ʻoe potu hahake ʻo hangē ko e fanga heʻe hono toko lahi: pea ko ʻenau fanga kāmeli naʻe taʻefaʻalaua, ʻo hangē ko hono lahi ʻoe ʻoneʻone ʻi he matātahi.
12Now the Midianites, Amalekites, and all the other people of the east had settled in the valley like a swarm of locusts, and their camels were as countless as the sand on the seashore.
13Pea ʻi he hoko ki ai ʻa Kitione, vakai, naʻe ʻi ai ʻae tangata naʻe fakahā ʻene misi ki hono tokoua, ʻo ne pehē, “Vakai, ne u misi ʻae misi, pea vakai, naʻe tō mai ha foʻi mā paʻale ki he tau lahi ʻo Mitiane, pea naʻe lave ia ki ha fale fehikitaki, pea holo ai, ʻo fulihi, pea naʻe holo ki lalo ʻae fale.”
13And as Gideon arrived, a man was telling his friend about a dream. “Behold, I had a dream,” he said, “and I saw a loaf of barley bread come tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent so hard that the tent overturned and collapsed.”
14Pea naʻe lea hono tokoua, ʻo pehē, “ʻOku ʻikai ha meʻa kehe eni, ka ko e heletā ʻa Kitione ko e foha ʻo Soasi, ko e tangata ʻIsileli: he kuo tuku ki hono nima ʻe he ʻOtua ʻa Mitiane, mo e tau kotoa pē.”
14His friend replied: “This is nothing less than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has delivered Midian and the whole camp into his hand.”
15¶ Pea ʻi he fanongo ʻa Kitione ki he fakahā ʻae misi, mo hono ʻuhinga ʻo ia, pea pehē, naʻe hū ia, pea toe liu atu ki he tau ʻa ʻIsileli, ʻo ne pehē, “Tuʻu hake he kuo tuku ʻe Sihova ki homou nima ʻae tau lahi ʻo Mitiane.”
15When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship. He returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Get up, for the LORD has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.”
16Pea naʻa ne vahe tolu ʻae kau tangata ʻe tolungeau ki he vāhenga kongakau ʻe tolu, ʻo ne ʻai ʻae meʻalea ʻi he nima ʻoe tangata kotoa pē, mo e ngeʻesi ipu, mo e maama ʻi he loto ipu.
16And he divided the three hundred men into three companies and gave each man a ram’s horn in one hand and a large jar in the other, containing a torch.
17Pea naʻe pehē ʻe ia kiate kinautolu, “Sio mai kiate au, pea faʻifaʻitaki mai: pea vakai, ʻo kau ka hoko ki he potu ʻituʻa ʻoe ʻapitanga, pea ʻe pehē, ko ia te u fai ʻeau, ʻe pehē pe hoʻomou fai.
17“Watch me and do as I do,” Gideon said. “When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do exactly as I do.
18‌ʻO kau ka ifi ʻeau ʻae meʻalea, ʻeau mo kinautolu kotoa pē ʻoku ʻiate au, mou ifi meʻalea ʻakimoutolu foki ʻi he potu kotoa pē ʻoe ʻapitanga kotoa pē, ʻo lea pehē, ‘ Ko e heletā ʻa Sihova, pea mo Kitione.’”
18When I and all who are with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns from all around the camp and shout, ‘For the LORD and for Gideon!’”
19¶ Ko ia naʻe hoko ʻa Kitione mo e kau tangata ʻe toko teau naʻe ʻiate ia, ki he tuʻa ʻapitanga ʻi he kamataʻanga ʻoe lakanga leʻo tuʻuapō: pea kuo nau toki fakanofo ʻae kau leʻo pea naʻa nau ifi ʻae ngaahi meʻalea, pea maumau ʻae ngaahi ipu naʻe ʻi honau nima.
19Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after the changing of the guard. They blew their horns and broke the jars that were in their hands.
20Pea naʻe ifi meʻalea ʻe he kongakau ʻe tolu, pea maumau ʻenau ngaahi ipu, kae puke ʻae ngaahi maama ʻi honau nima, mo e meʻalea honau nima toʻomataʻu ke ifi ʻaki: pea naʻa nau kalanga, “Ko e heletā ʻa Sihova, pea mo Kitione.”
20The three companies blew their horns and shattered their jars. Holding the torches in their left hands and the horns in their right hands, they shouted, “A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!”
21Pea naʻa nau tuʻu ʻae tangata taki taha ʻi hono potu ʻo takatakai ʻi he ʻapitanga: pea naʻe feleleʻi ʻae tau kotoa pē, pea tangi, mo hola.
21Each Israelite took his position around the camp, and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran.
22Pea naʻe ifi ʻaki ʻae meʻalea ʻe he toko tolungeau, pea naʻe fai ʻe Sihova ke ʻai ʻe he tangata kotoa pē ʻene heletā ki hono tokoua ʻi he tau kotoa pē: pea naʻe hola ʻae tau ki Pete-Sita ʻi Selelati, pea ki he potu ʻo ʻEpeli-Mihola, ʻo aʻu ki Tapati.
22And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded, the LORD set all the men in the camp against one another with their swords. The army fled to Beth-shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
23Pea naʻe fakataha ʻae kau tangata ʻo ʻIsileli mei Nafitali, pea mei ʻAseli, pea mei Manase kotoa pē, ʻonau tuli ki he kakai Mitiane.
23Then the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and they pursued the Midianites.
24Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim to say, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan ahead of them as far as Beth-barah.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth-barah.
25Pea naʻa nau fakapōpula ʻae houʻeiki ʻe toko ua ʻoe kakai Mitiane, ko Olepi mo Siipi; pea nau tāmateʻi ʻa Olepi ʻi he fungamaka ko Olepi, pea nau tāmateʻi ʻa Siipi ʻi he tataʻoʻanga uaine ʻo Siipi, ʻonau tuli ʻa Mitiane, pea naʻa nau ʻomi ʻae ʻulu ʻo Olepi mo Siipi kia Kitione, ʻi he kauvai ʻe taha ʻo Sioatani.
25They also captured Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of Midian; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. So they pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of the Jordan.
