Tongan Bible, Revised West Version
King James Version with Apocrypha
1Pea kuo hoko ʻa Fesito ki he puleʻanga, pea hili ʻae ʻaho ʻe tolu, naʻe ʻalu hake ia ʻi Sesalia ki Selūsalema.
1Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Cæsarea to Jerusalem.
2Pea toki fakahā ʻa Paula kiate ia ʻe he taulaʻeiki lahi mo e houʻeiki ʻi he kakai Siu, pea nau kole kiate ia.
2Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,
3Mo holi ke ʻofa ia, ʻo ne fekau ke ʻomai ia ki Selūsalema, ka nau toka tataʻo ʻi he hala ke tāmateʻi ia.
3And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.
4Ka naʻe pehē ʻe Fesito, “Ke nofo pe ʻa Paula ʻi Sesalia, kae toe siʻi pea ʻalu pe ia ki ai.”
4But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Cæsarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither .
5Pea naʻa ne pehē, “Ke tau ʻalu hifo mo kimoutolu, ʻe faʻa ʻalu, ʻo talatalaaki ʻae tangata ko ia, ʻo kapau ʻoku ʻiate ia ha kovi.”
5Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me , and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.
6Pea ko e ʻaho hongofulu tupu ʻene nofo ʻiate kinautolu, pea ʻalu hifo ia ki Sesalia; pea ʻi he ʻaho naʻe feholoi, naʻe nofo ia ʻi he nofoʻa fakamaau mo ne fekau ke ʻomi ʻa Paula.
6And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Cæsarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought.
7Pea kuo haʻu ia, pea tutuʻu takatakai ʻa e kau Siu kuo nau ʻalu hifo mei Selūsalema, ʻo tukuakiʻi ʻa Paula ʻi he ngaahi kovi lahi mo mamafa, ka naʻe ʻikai te nau faʻa fakamoʻoni ki ai.
7And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.
8Ka naʻe fakamatala ʻe ia, “ʻOku ʻikai ʻaupito te u fai ha kovi siʻi ki he fono ʻae kakai Siu, pe ki he falelotu lahi, pe kia Sisa.”
8While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Cæsar, have I offended any thing at all.
9Ka naʻe loto ʻa Fesito ke ne fai ke fakafiefiaʻi ʻae kakai Siu, pea ne leaange kia Paula, ʻo pehē, “Te ke ʻalu hake ki Selūsalema, ke fakamaau ai koe ʻi he ngaahi meʻa ni ʻi hoku ʻao?”
9But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?
10Pea pehē ʻe Paula, “ʻOku ou tuʻu ʻi he nofoʻa fakamaau ʻo Sisa, ʻaia ʻoku totonu ke fakamaau ai au. ʻOku ʻikai te u fai ha kovi ki he kakai Siu, pea ʻoku ke ʻilo pau ia.
10Then said Paul, I stand at Cæsar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.
11He kapau ko e fai kovi au, pe kuo u fai ha meʻa ʻoku totonu ke u mate ai, ʻoku ʻikai teu fie hao mei he mate: pea kapau ʻoku ʻikai ha meʻa ʻoku tukuakiʻi ai au ʻekinautolu ni, pea ʻoku ʻikai ha tangata ʻe faʻa tuku au kiate kinautolu. Te u fakamaau pe au ʻia Sisa.”
11For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Cæsar.
12Pea toki alea ʻa Fesito mo e kau fakamaau pea ne pehē, Kuo ke pehē te ke fakamaau pe ʻia Sisa? Pea te ke ʻalu koe kia Sisa.
12Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Cæsar? unto Cæsar shalt thou go.
13Pea kuo hili ʻae ʻaho niʻihi, pea haʻu ʻae tuʻi ko ʻAkilipa mo Pelenaisi ki Sesalia ke nau feʻiloaki mo Fesito.
13And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Cæsarea to salute Festus.
14Pea kuo na nofo ai ʻo ʻaho lahi, pea fakahā ʻe Fesito ʻae meʻa ʻa Paula ki he tuʻi, ʻo ne pehē, “ʻOku ai ʻae tangata ʻe taha naʻe tuku pōpula ʻe Filike:
14And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul’s cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:
15Pea naʻe fakahā mai ia ʻi heʻeku kei ʻi Selūsalema, ʻe he kau taulaʻeiki lahi mo e mātuʻa ʻoe kakai Siu, ʻonau kole ke tukuange ia ke tāmateʻi.
15About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me , desiring to have judgment against him.
16Ka ne u pehē kiate kinautolu, ʻOku ʻikai ko e anga ʻo Loma ke tomuʻa tukuange ha tangata ke mate, kaeʻoua ke fakamaau fakataha ʻaia ʻoku tukuakiʻi mo kinautolu ʻoku nau tukuakiʻi ia, pea ʻoua ke ne fakamatala ʻe ia ʻae kovi kuo tukuakiʻi ai ia.
16To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.
17Pea ko ia, ʻi heʻenau haʻu ki heni, ʻo pongipongi ai, naʻaku nofo leva ʻi he nofoʻa fakamaau pea u fekau ke ʻomi ʻae tangata.
17Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.
18Pea ʻi he tutuʻu hake ʻae kau tukuaki, naʻe ʻikai te nau talatalaakiʻi ia ʻi ha meʻa naʻaku ʻamanaki ki ai:
18Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:
19Ka nau talatalaakiʻi ia ʻi he ngaahi meʻa ʻi heʻenau lotu ʻanautolu, pea ki he tokotaha kuo mate ko Sisu, ka naʻe fakapapau ʻe Paula kuo moʻui ia.
19But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.
20Pea koeʻuhi naʻe ʻikai te u ʻilo pe fēfeeʻi ʻae ʻeke ʻoe ngaahi meʻa pehē, ne u fehuʻi pe te ne ʻalu ki Selūsalema, ʻo fakamaau ai ʻi he ngaahi meʻa ni.
20And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.
21Ka ʻi he pehē ʻe Paula ʻe fakamaauʻi ia ʻi he ʻao ʻo ʻAokositusi, ko ia ne u fekau ke tuku pe ia kaeʻoua ke u ʻatu ia kia Sisa.”
21But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Cæsar.
22Pea pehē ʻe ʻAkilipa kia Fesito, “ʻAmusiaange ʻeau kuo u fanongo foki au ki he tangata.” Pea pehē ʻe ia, “Te ke fanongo kiate ia ʻapongipongi.”
22Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.
23Pea ʻi he ʻapongipongi, naʻe haʻu ʻa ʻAkilipa mo Pelenaisi, mo e teunga lahi ʻaupito, ʻo hū ki he potu fakamaau mo e ngaahi ʻeikitau, mo e kau matāpule ʻoe kolo, pea ʻi he fekau ʻe Fesito naʻe ʻomi ʻa Paula.
23And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus’ commandment Paul was brought forth.
24Pea pehē ʻe Fesito, “ʻE tuʻi ko ʻAkilipa, mo e kakai kotoa pē ʻoku tau fakataha ni, ʻoku mou mamata ki he tangata ni, ʻaia kuo kole lahi ai kiate au ʻe he kakai Siu kotoa pē ʻi Selūsalema, pea ʻi heni foki, ʻonau kalanga ʻoku ʻikai lelei ke moʻui ai pe ia.
24And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.
25Ka ʻi heʻeku ʻilo ʻoku ʻikai te ne fai ha meʻa ʻe totonu ke mate ai ia, pea ʻi heʻene pehē ʻe ia ʻe fakamaauʻi pe ia ʻia ʻAokositusi, kuo maʻu hoku loto ke u tuku atu ia.
25But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.
26Ka ʻoku ʻikai te u maʻu ha meʻa kuo fakapapau kiate ia ke u tohi atu ai ki heʻeku ʻeiki. Ko ia kuo u ʻomi ai ia ki homou ʻao, pea ki he ʻao ʻoe tuʻi ko ʻAkilipa, koeʻuhi ka hili hono ʻekea, te u ʻilo ai ha meʻa ke tohi.
26Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write.
27He ʻoku matamata vale kiate au ke tuku atu ha pōpula, kae ʻikai ke fakamatala ʻae ngaahi kovi ʻoku talatalaakiʻi ai ia.”
27For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him.
